The equipment was closed down to prevent pipes from bursting in below-freezing temperatures, the local fire brigade said on its microblog. Nearly 300 mostly wooden houses were destroyed in the blaze in Dukezong in Yunnan province on Saturday. The town, which dates back 1,300 years, is popular with tourists. The fire prevention system was installed three years ago and cost 8m yuan ($1.3m; £805,000), the Associated Press news agency quoted the Deqen prefecture fire brigade microblog as saying. Officials said that more than 2,600 people have lost their homes in the blaze, which raged for nearly 10 hours before it was put out by 2,000 firefighters, police and volunteers. No fatalities were reported. A store owner surnamed Pan told AP on Monday that they would likely be rebuilding what they had lost.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-25714517
Glad to know China's the most efficient and well governed country.
Glad to know China's the most efficient and well governed country.
To be honest I'd expect something like this happening anywhere in the world if their pipes had frozen.
Glad to know China's the most efficient and well governed country.
a local fire of a rural town doesnt really reflect the quality of the administration of an entire country
Glad to know China's the most efficient and well governed country.
yeah like they would work if the pipes were frozen do you even think before you post
Glad to know China's the most efficient and well governed country.
The system would not have worked even if the pipes were frozen, genius.
The system would not have worked even if the pipes were frozen, genius.
Wouldn't the fire have thawed the pipes?
The pipes might be damaged because of the water expanding inside them after they froze so if they thawed they still might not be usable.
Wouldn't the fire have thawed the pipes?
I think if you thought critically about that statement for just a minute you might reach a conclusion :v: And while I get what people are saying - it makes sense to turn it off, if the pipes would freeze when filled with water - I can't help but wonder why they're spending a whole lot of money on a system that's clearly useless an appreciable proportion of the time.
