MASSAPEQUA, N.Y. — One of the world’s most prolific bootleggers of Hollywood DVDs loves his morning farina. He has spent eight years churning out hundreds of thousands of copies of “The Hangover,” “Gran Torino” and other first-run movies from his small Long Island apartment to ship overseas.
“Big Hy” — his handle among many loyal customers — would almost certainly be cast as Hollywood Enemy No. 1 but for a few details. He is actually Hyman Strachman, a 92-year-old, 5-foot-5 World War II veteran trying to stay busy after the death of his wife. And he has sent every one of his copied DVDs, almost 4,000 boxes of them to date, free to American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.
With the United States military presence in those regions dwindling, Big Hy Strachman will live on in many soldiers’ hearts as one of the war’s more shadowy heroes.
“It’s not the right thing to do, but I did it,” Mr. Strachman said, acknowledging that his actions violated copyright law.
“If I were younger,” he added, “maybe I’d be spending time in the hoosegow.”
I'd much rather have some happy soldiers being entertained in a shitty situation than some already rich company making some extra profit. Hollywood can go fuck itself.
???whats a hoosegow
???whats a hoosegow
Just a guess, but jail?
Hoosegow is ol' timer slang for prison.
The only smart way Hollywood can stop this guy is to start sending free movies themselves, but that won't happen.
Damn, that dude doesn't seem or look like he's 92 years old.
They're also charging his brother for being an accomplice. This picture of him was released earlier:

how does he afford to send so many movies and dvds to burn them onto? well he seems nice i hope they don't throw him in the hoosegow
[editline]29th April 2012[/editline]
i mean, i had something shipped to me in nz from usa and that was 46$ american dollars for international shipping surely it would be more for usa to afghanistan and he must have done it so often
His position in the picture indicates substantial amounts of "I don't give a fuck."

I would assume that he has had letters of thanks and maybe donations, or perhaps he worked in an industry with pension or spending money from retirement. Either way, he's a saint.
Cry some more Hollywood.
This guy seems like such a bro to hang out with.

I believe the US Postal Service offers heavily discounted/free shipping for gifts to overseas soldiers.
Breaking news, Hollywood is butthurt
If hollywood was any good, they'd be doing this themselves.
yknow i think it would be better to send books instead. i reckon it'd be a way better way to cope with active service if you had a nice magical book world you could settle into after every i dunno patrol or whatever the fuck

Movies are better if you want to socialize with your comrades by watching some together. Strengthens your relations.

You need to pay for books, you can copy movies for free.

print them out i guess i think paper is cheaper than blank dvds but jeez maybe the government should be doing this anyway? they should be responsible for the morale of their soldiers not this old guy he should be able to enjoy his pension or whatever

I don't know how pricing is in US but say a 200 page book would cost much more to print than one blank dvd. Though I agree government should be funding morale boosting and provide troops with stress killers/entertainment. That should not only boost morale but I think also reduce the amount of people going mentally sick.

this is the US army we're talking about dude, dr seuss books don't go 200 pages long. hahahaha just kidding guys
If you want good movies for the soldiers shouldn't have picked Gran Torino because that shit is BORING.
Why is it that my favourite part about this article is that he used an old timey word for prison?
The article also really shows where the focus of the MPAA is. The troops get reel to reel films and projectors? That's fucking convenient for the men serving your country.
But hey, it means they'll have to buy the film when they get home!

He has a sweet rig.
What a hero.
LOL "Hyman"
Like a vagina.
The real news story here is that a 92 year old actually knows how to work a computer and copy DVDs.
???whats a hoosegow
Old American South slang for prison or jail, usually implying one that engages in corporal punishment.
Like 'slammer,' 'clink,' and 'lockup.'
