Oculus Rift goes HD: our first look at virtual reality, and virtual cinema, in 1080p
Oculus VR is kicking off E3 with an upgrade to its virtual reality console, the Rift. By simply upgrading its optics from one off-the-shelf cellphone display to another, the company has upgraded the goggles to 1080p — and based on a few minutes of time with Rifts old and new, the upgrade makes a huge difference. Gone is what CEO Brendan Iribe called "the screen-door effect," and everything comes in much sharper and clearer. We played a game rendered in the newly-integrated Unreal Engine 4, and from the snowflakes outside to the large, horned monster inside, details just pop in a way they never did before. It makes the world feel more immersive, more immediate.
http://www.theverge.com/2013/6/11/4419802/oculus-rift-goes-hd-virtual-reality-cinema
Good, 720p is really too little for a screen that big and that close. We'll probably want better than 1080p further on, but for a first it'll do nicely, not to mention delay might be the bigger issue.
delicious
Hell fucking yes!
It just popped into my head, could this be used to simulate near and farsightedness? I've always wanted people with perfect vision to see what us guys see.
I'm sold
It just popped into my head, could this be used to simulate near and farsightedness? If anything it will be better to simulate 20/15 for the visually impaired due to the optics system. Infact that gives me an idea, lets just put a camera on it

Imagine HL2 on this. If you get shot it the head your glasses come off and your vision is now blurry until you find new glasses.
Imagine HL2 on this. If you get shot it the head your glasses come off and your vision is now blurry until you find new glasses.
whoa, thats an awesome idea, at least for some games
I hope I get this one instead of the old one, they updated my order to processed and ready to ship just the other day.
This is cool and all but I wonder if 1080p will be enough when it's so close to your eyes.
This is cool and all but I wonder if 1080p will be enough when it's so close to your eyes.
The only thing I've heard there has REALLY been an issue has been reading small text. So hopefully that's better now.
I fucking love the advancements on virtual reality
I hope I get this one instead of the old one, they updated my order to processed and ready to ship just the other day.
did you even read the article lol they said they only just got this version working and don't know when they'll make it ready. i'm pretty sure they said anyone who orders a dk1 will get that regardless.
Imagine HL2 on this. If you get shot it the head your glasses come off and your vision is now blurry until you find new glasses.
if you get shot in the head you don't have to worry about glasses anymore
I've been digging my Oculus Rift dev kit for a while, but the HD one is coming? This is awesome. Sitting inside the virtual cinema is an awesome way to watch a movie, there is no outside distractions so it makes watching a movie really immersive

I bet it's the HTC One's screen.
Imagine HL2 on this. If you get shot it the head your glasses come off and your vision is now blurry until you find new glasses.
Blacklight Retribution is about soldiers tapping their VR helmets to wallhack. Now that's what I'd like to do just for the parallel.
Man I just ordered a dev kit. I wonder if it's possible to simply upgrade the dev kits screen by taking it out and swapping in a new one. Wouldn't really want to fork out another 300 for a screen upgrade, but this is super cool news!
It just popped into my head, could this be used to simulate near and farsightedness? Maybe they could make an accurate self-test for visual acuity. That'd be awesome.
So, how much less of an experience will I get being near-blind in one eye? I'm assuming the 3D makes up the majority of the immersion.
So, how much less of an experience will I get being near-blind in one eye? If you aren't used to seeing depth anyway then it shouldn't really make a difference to immersion.
I hope I get this one instead of the old one, they updated my order to processed and ready to ship just the other day.
You won't. Wouldn't be fair on everyone else who got before you.

The longer I go on the more I forget what the glory days used to be like.

The issue is not seeing the image being sent to the other eye. *[sub][sub]Unless it's sports. Fuck small, fast moving objects.[/sub][/sub]
Is there any word about the price at all? Or any kind of est?
This is cool and all but I wonder if 1080p will be enough when it's so close to your eyes.
Yeah, 1080 looks good on a big screen 8 feet away, but it's not that impressive an inch away from your eyes. I forsee trouble with flight simulators and such where you need to spot targets a long distance away. Still, improvement is good, and I can't wait to get ahold of one.
Yeah, 1080 looks good on a big screen 8 feet away, but it's not that impressive an inch away from your eyes.
Occulus Rift is hardly a big screen though. You're forgetting that resolution is being condensed to just a few centimetres, rather than 24 inches or more.
i hope thats not the final design, and just a test device or something cause i prefered the devkit design.
