[h2]Stealth[/h2]
[b]Introduction[/b]
I've recently become quite fond of the arts of stealth. Stealth for being invisible, stealth for being quiet, and just stealth in general.
I decided to make a thread about stealth because I was rather bored.
Some situations where you might use stealth are:
- Sneaking to the bathroom or downstairs late at night without waking people up.
- Stealing things (Well not that you should)
- Playing hilarious practical jokes on people
- Scaring people
- Making people think you are a fucking weirdo if you get caught.
- Can finally avoid social situations without punching people in the face and screaming "i have aspergers"
[b]What is stealth?[/b]
I'm sure you are all familiar with the Metal Gear Solid franchise and the Splinter Cell franchise. These games started my obsession with stealth along with Mission Impossible (The game) and The Great Escape (The game). What is the definition of stealth, exactly? Well, stealth is essentially cautious and surreptitious action or movement without being detected. Why am I making this thread? Simple, because not many people truly know the powers stealth can bestow upon you and how it is very fun to be a sneaky little bastard.
[b]How do I preform this "Stealth"?[/b]
Stealth, in theory, is a very simple concept. Be undetected whilst moving around and (possibly) completing objectives. Stealth is a lot harder in practice. To be undetected is a complex art. There are four main components to being stealthy. I will list them and then describe them in further detail as we continue.
- Sound
- Vision
- Element 1 (You)
- Element 2, 3 (etc.. according to the number of people you want to navigate by undetected.)
Stealth is all about Element 1 moving past other Elements in an area completely undetected. Like a ghost. To do this you need to think about two things; Sound and Vision. I will go over Sound and Vision respectively now.
[b]Sound and Vision[/b]
Sound and Vision are very important to stealth. Humans are very good at hearing and seeing other humans and that's why stealth is difficult. To move silently you need to be in a position similar to this for most of your movement.
[img]http://xboxmedia.ign.com/xbox/image/Crouch.jpg[/img]
(Yes it is of a video game but it is surprisingly accurate).
Now, start in this position with your knees bent to a point that makes Element 1 (You) the smallest possible and keep a low profile without feeling uncomfortable or very strained. Put your hands in a position similar to the picture above; around your knees and thighs area. To start moving you want you stay crouched and move (very slowly) forward by putting one foot in front of the other and landing your foot in a heel-to-toe motion. All of this is to be done very slowly but once you get the hang of it you should be able to crouch-run pretty fast with no sound. During the step you should keep your foot as close to the ground as possible while not touching the ground, if that makes sense. If it touches it can make a loud dragging sound and blow your cover. Also during the step make your feet curved a little when you land. Not too much but just a little bit of curve. It makes it easier to balance your weight and it is quieter. Move slowly yet deliberately. You know the muscle you tighten to keep piss in when you gotta take a leak really bad? Tighten that muscle when you move. It helps to absorb the impact, reducing noise.
[b]THIS ALSO MIGHT BE TRUE. SOMEONE POSTED THIS[/b]
Dunno where you heard that, but that is not at all the position you need to be in to move silently, any position will work so long as you decreases the amount of friction occurring between your clothing, try not to step down too harshly or clap the floor with your feet and pay mindfulness to the type of surface you're navigating. You're much better off just moving in the way you're most comfortable, the only thing crouching achieves is making your silhouette smaller.
Now, on to the Vision portion of this section. Vision is the hardest part in Stealth. Darkness is a very very important part in Stealth because if you are completely still in darkness with the right clothes (which I will discuss in a further section) you should be able to pass off as an object or nothing at all. The first thing that makes humans recognize other humans is motion so stay very still. If you open doors make sure you put them back to their original place or people will know something is up so make sure everything stays the same unless it is vital to your objective that you take something (like cookies or some chips at 5:00AM). Don't look at people in the eye. Remember that people have a large area of view and CAN see things out of the corner of their eye if it's moving fast enough and they aren't focused on something. If you are going to sneak up on someone NEVER do it from the side. Always from where you can only see up to their ear. If you think someone may be looking in your direction hide your face if it is not already concealed. Humans will easily recognize faces in objects, much easier than seeing a whole hidden body.
[b]AND YET ANOTHER METHOD[/b]
Feet close together to keep your center of balance over your legs at all times, but not so close that you need to balance to stay upright- approximately shoulder width. Keep your back bent over, and your legs only slightly bent. Take short steps with the heel first, leaning on your back foot to minimize sound, then transferring your weight to the front foot as you complete the motion, using your arms for counterbalance. Your rear foot should leave the ground at the same rate that your front foot flattens on the ground.
One of the many government-taught skills my father passed on to me.
[b]Clothing/Blending[/b]
Your gear can vary depending on the environment you're in. NEVER wear black. It makes a silhouette in the dark and stands out in the day. If it's pretty dark wear a mix of navy blue and grey. You can also throw in some white to split up your figure to make you look less human which is always good. Try to wear tight clothes if you can but if it has to be loose try a hoodie that's not too baggy. Try to show the minimum amount of skin possible so consider investing in a balaclava and some gloves and maybe even a tactical vest. Depends how serious you are about this. In the day clothes doesn't matter. Just don't go in wearing a clown suit and you should be fine. Instead of blending in with the walls try blending in with the crowd if there is one. If there isn't try hiding in places, and taking cover behind things in shaded areas like dark alleyways.

[b]Evasion[/b]
If worst comes to worst and you're spotted, forget all stealth and just BOLT out of there. Take lots of sharp corners and try to get them to lose visual contact with you. Then you can find a good hiding place, stay there for like 30 seconds or so and make your way closer and closer to an exit with each hiding place. NOTE: Just because you THINK someone sees you it doesn't mean they do. Stay completely still until they start making fast movements or run at you.
[b]Distraction[/b]
If it's dark and the person looking for you can't see well, make a whistle noise or something. It's almost 100% certain they will come to the source of the sound. Before they do, slowly make your way out of the place you made the sound from. Then while they're looking in the sound source's origin-place, you can get the hell out of there, OR get them from behind if you are fighting against real enemies. You can also throw an object away from you in the dark to make a distracting sound.
[b]End[/b]
I think that is pretty much it and I hope you enjoyed my tutorial on the basics of stealth. I may be adding more to this later and I really do hope you enjoy this.
[h2]PROTIPS[/h2]
- To avoid creaky floorboards stay next to the walls
- To avoid creaky stairs stay to the edge of each step and close t the wall if possible.
- Stretch before sneaking to avoid joint pops.
- If your looking to move across an outdoor areas while minimizing noise, always walk on either dirt or fresh grass thats still alive. Dead grass crunches when its stepped on, resulting in loud noise and can alert people around you.
- To open a door, push hard on the handle and open it enough so that you can move the door around and slip through. Also make sure you always push the handle down. A slight groan is better than a sudden alarming creak.I would think it would be better to start opening the door slowly to asses it's potential to creak, and then choose whether to open quickly or slowly. Lift a door upwards when opening it, it puts less weight on the hinges, reducing the creek.
- To jump/fall quietly, right before you hit the ground, pull your legs up, and land on your toes. When you pull your legs up, it makes it so that your feet hit the ground slower, so it'll make less impact noise.
- Clothing makes noise. Cotton clothes make the least. Tennis shoes are ideal footwear.
- Also, put your phone on fucking silent. Turn off vibrate, too.
- If you want to open your fridge without anyone hearing you, break the seal on the length of the door with your finger and you won't get any annoying sound when you go to open it.
- Size doesn't matter unless you are trying to fit into small spaces. I'm a large kid, largest in my family, and yet I remain the stealthiest.
- Stay high. The first places people look are left, right, forward and back.
[h2]Games[/h2]
There are lots of fun games you can do with friends to practice your stealth!
- Infiltration: Where 1-3 of your friends patrol a house or area and you have to infiltrate with a max of 3 alerts. If they touch you, you have to start from the beginning and your mission is to get to a set location, pick something up and bring it back to your base.
- I've done a lot of sneaking in my time.
A couple years ago, me and my friend (hopefully) invented [i]ninja'ing[/i] and put our skills to the test.
You may ask, "Quark, what the hell is [i]ninja'ing[/i], and why are we putting [i] tags around it?"
Well, ninja'ing is where you, and a friend, dress up like a ninja, and quietly patrol streets at night until you see someone (there's one person almost every night), which is when you'll scare the hell out of them.
How do you do it??
First off, dress in tight, black clothing. Find a black T-Shirt and follow the ninja mask guide in clothing.
(After you make the ninja-mask, tuck the excess cloth under your tight-black clothing.
Now that you're dressed up as a ninja, it's time to hit the streets. Follow the steps in the OP if this thread to try to remain unnoticed. Stay away from street lights if possible. Wait until you see someone.
When you see someone, motion to your friend to begin circling the person quietly. Begin making ninja-sounds and whispering in fake (or real..) Japanese. This person, if they don't have a gun, will be scared senseless and take off running.
[b]You've successfully gone [i]ninja'ing![/i][/b]
- My friends and I used to play this freaky scary yet awesome game. It never really had a name, but the point is one of us would wear a greenman suit (which looks really creepy in low light situations), and the rest of us had Nerf Guns. The person in the greenman suit would hide somewhere in the house, sneak around and try and "kill" the guys with the Nerf Guns. The Nerf Guns traveled in small groups and in turn tried to blast the Greenman. The house was always pitch black, and because parents were out of town, we would set the radio to white noise, and flip over furniture and stuff. It was scary as shit being one of the Nerf guys cause you never know if Greenman is going to be in that closet. And its so dark that everything can freak you out.
On one occasion me and two friends cornered the greenman in a walk-in closet. So we closed the door to the closet with the logic of cutting off the light coming in from the window in the next room. Figured if we cant see very well, he definitely cannot see at all through the spandex over his face. I was wrong. He reached out and squeezed my head and I didn't see any of it. I screamed like a little girl, and my friends started blind shooting, but he ended up taking us all down.
A good greenman is stealthy as fuck, and this becomes the best game ever. May sound dumb, but I love it.
So, have you actually practiced stealth as one of your friends as the target? And what was their reaction?
[QUOTE=Ritave;31698486]So, have you actually practiced stealth as one of your friends as the target? And what was their reaction?[/QUOTE]
I haven't gotten around to it much since a lot of my friends are actually on their vacations but I've practiced it on my family and I can scare the shit out of them 90% of the time.

Sounds pretty useful. I think I'll try it right now.
Would this work with rape?

Yes the same rules apply.
I love stealth missions in games, like in CoD
I thought you guys would hate this thread to be honest.
How do I get past wooden floorboards?
Fuck, got caught going down the stairs almost instantly. Goddamn creaky stairs.
[QUOTE=elitehakor v2;31698689]How do I get past wooden floorboards?[/QUOTE]
Sorry man forgot to add that. They creak a lot less close to the walls.
I love how in some movies, ninjas still use black outfits while they are hiding in the snow.
[QUOTE=Firefox42;31698718]Fuck, got caught going down the stairs almost instantly. Goddamn creaky stairs.[/QUOTE]
Stay to the very edge of the stairs.

Added a tips section.
I remember once when I was in the bathroom right before I was going to bed. My brother sneaked into my room and hid under my computer bench. When I walked into the room, I turned off the lights before I even saw he was under there. I jumped into my bed to sleep and after like 2 minutes I heard heavy breathing and scratching noises. I opened my eyes and refused to close them as I was lying there in the dark. After a while my eyes got used to the darkness and the room became brighter. Soon enough I saw someone sitting under the bench and I litteraly shat myself and screamed. I hit the light button and I saw my brother sitting under there, laughing so much he cried. I was like 11 by then. :v:
Do you know how to run across a forest without bending blades of grass so an enemy can't track you? Until you do you are just a young grasshopper.

Wow he should have changed positions after he made the noises.
Stealth is one of my favourite things in games, I've always loved Splinter Cell.
[QUOTE=Jiro-uk-;31698853]Stealth is one of my favourite things in games, I've always loved Splinter Cell.[/QUOTE]
Me too. It's just as fun in real life.
[editline]12th August 2011[/editline]
Give yourself little missions to do around the house while being stealthy.
[QUOTE=LieutenantLeo;31698845]Wow he should have changed positions after he made the noises.[/QUOTE]
Because he was obviously trying to snap Zovox's neck :v:
dont forget a cardboard box
[QUOTE=elitehakor v2;31698689]How do I get past wooden floorboards?[/QUOTE]
Put some of your body weight on the railing, as well as stepping near the walls. You will be like a ninja.
[QUOTE=Mattk50;31698903]dont forget a cardboard box[/QUOTE]
IF there is a big enough cardboard box and you're silent that works.
whenever i try to sneak up on someone my joints pop and alert them
[QUOTE=Sottalytober;31699009]whenever i try to sneak up on someone my joints pop and alert them[/QUOTE] Stretching before sneaking stops this.
TBH the OP reads like 'I just played a bunch of stealth videogames, here's what they taught me'. For starters, that squatting pose does absolutely nothing to change the amount of noise you make, but does slow you down due to the unnatural posture, which hinders balance and can create additional noise if you slip up. Nobody actually trained in stealth moves like that.
Also, you didn't list Thief in example games. For shame.
This tips are all pretty elementary from anyone who's taken Stealth 101 class in school [img]http://forum.statcounter.com/vb/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif[/img]
Useful tip which I guess is kind of related to this thread and you might not have thought of; keep an eye closed for a while if you're in a lit room and you're about to go through a room without any light. When you open the closed eye in the darker room, it'll be more adjusted to the dark and you'll be able to see better than you would normally.
I mean, it's not like night vision or anything but it is the difference between seeing fuck all and seeing slightly more than fuck all.
