I just got a new hard drive. Whenever a program is running that uses the drive, the entire computer slows to a crawl. Right-clicking on files takes ages to bring up the menu, deleting/moving a file takes forever, firefox randomly freezes, etc. Programs that cause this are any sort of setup wizard, windows update, moving files, and more. Is this a faulty drive? Is there anything I can do? [editline]25th May 2011[/editline] Browsing websites also freezes the computer.
1TB 7200RPM drive for $139.99? :psyduck: Am I missing something or is that insanely expensive?
1TB 7200RPM drive for $139.99? :psyduck:
More expensive = better quality right? Obviously not. :saddowns: [editline]25th May 2011[/editline] Is this a good or bad speed for moving a single file from one partition to another? The computer was completely unuseable while the file was being moved.
I guess there's no harm in an RMA. Are you transferring files from a flash drive or another external drive? Also, make sure it's not formatted with FAT32. You're looking for NTFS.
I guess there's no harm in an RMA. Are you transferring files from a flash drive or another external drive?
I moved about 250gb of data from an old hard drive to this one and then formatted the old one. It took ~5 hours. [editline]25th May 2011[/editline] "another external drive" this is my primary hard drive.
may I ask wha did you buy this drive? you could get a samsung f3 1tb for half of this money and get much better performance
may I ask wha did you buy this drive? you could get a samsung f3 1tb for half of this money and get much better performance
My previous hard drive was a hitachi deskstar and was extremely slow, so I went for the "enterprise level" expensive hard drive. [editline]25th May 2011[/editline] @MTMod It's ntfs. [editline]25th May 2011[/editline]
Weird, its a Caviar Black. Typically Blacks are used for high-end server grade storage. I'd RMA it as it should be performing at listed speeds.
How are you connecting the drive to your computer?
send it back, get a spinpoint F3 instead
RMA, try and see if you can get your money back.
Weird, its a Caviar Black. Typically Blacks are used for high-end server grade storage. I don't want to have to copy all my files again.
How are you connecting the drive to your computer?
SATA, but my computer is listing it as SCSI.
send it back, get a spinpoint F3 instead
They'll let me send it back and get a different one instead? I used scan.co.uk
RMA, try and see if you can get your money back.
I'll try calling them in the morning I guess...
By any chance, have you tested the drive on another PC?
By any chance, have you tested the drive on another PC?
I don't have another, unless there's some way to connect it to a netbook. The hitachi drive was slow but far outperformed this. [editline]25th May 2011[/editline] It's also very loud, the case hides all the fan noise yet the hard drive's ticking and clicking can be heard still. [editline]25th May 2011[/editline] If I can get my money back, how would two F3's do? I have hardware RAID support. [editline]25th May 2011[/editline] It's 1tb, yet I only have 930gb (if that matters). [editline]25th May 2011[/editline] I recorded it. Is this healthy or broken noise? http://download.cnet.com/WinDLG/3000-2086_4-11113043.html Run quick test. [editline]25th May 2011[/editline]
It's also very loud, the case hides all the fan noise yet the hard drive's ticking and clicking can be heard still.
Actually if it's clicking, don't bother doing anything, return it. Just fyi, even the most expensive drives can fail if there's a bad batch. I've had 2 velociraptors fail on me, then I got one from a different series and all has been fine since.
Quick test passed.
Do extended then. I think it takes about an hour.
It sounds more like it's a software issue. Western Digital hard drives last much longer and are faster than other brands in my opinion, so I would suggest sticking with Western Digital if you RMA.
Oh it's caviar black. I didn't really bother checking which drive exactly it is. Yeah I don't think it's a hardware problem. You should probably try checking your bios settings, see how the hard drive is set up. Turn off anything raid or scsi related and use ide/ahci. Also, 930 gibibytes is 1 terabyte so that's normal
Weird, its a Caviar Black. Typically Blacks are used for high-end server grade storage. If a long test does give any errors send it RMA.
If it's ticking RMA it. It shouldn't matter if it passes tests. It's ticking, making weird sounds and it's not performing 10% of what it should be. Also When my drive was failing, my system would freeze frequently too.
Caviar Blacks ain't really silent and i can hear the read/write operation clicking noise trough my Antec P180 which uses Aluminium - Plastic - Aluminium side panels which supresses all noises by alot. But if those clicks ain't the normal read/write clicks then definetly RMA it.
Be sure it's set up to use AHCI and not IDE.

I'm running the extended scan, will post back with the results when it's done (eta is 3 hours). Is it OK if I browse the internet or play a game while it's running? Steam is on a seperate HDD but Firefox is on the one being scanned. [editline]25th May 2011[/editline] Also, what is this SCSI stuff? I googled and it seems like an alternative to SATA, yet it's a SATA hard drive.
Just ignore it. Also the SCSI interface is physically different from the SATA interface, but Windows reports it as SCSI.
:wtc: [editline]26th May 2011[/editline] All my anime is gone. :saddowns: [editline]26th May 2011[/editline] Extended test passed. D:\ is still missing. [editline]26th May 2011[/editline] I went into the BIOS and changed "SATA Type" from "RAID" to "Native IDE". Windows is now showing the drives as ATA instead of SCSI. There's no performance difference that I can tell.
RMA the drive as we have previously stated.
Just RMA it.
send it back, get a consumer drive instead you don't need enterprise drives
