The ultrabook is aimed at developers, offering them “the essentials they want” bundled up in a Linux-harboring device. The laptop is available for purchase now from Dell starting at $1,449. You can also nab a Windows version of the machine if Ubuntu isn’t your thing. The XPS 13 features a 13.3-inch display with a resolution of 1366 x 768. Inside you’ll find an Intel Core i7-3517U 3GHz processor and 8GB of RAM. There’s Intel HD 4000 graphics, and a 256GB SSD. The operating system is the latest and greatest Ubuntu version 12.04. It weighs in at a svelte 2.99lbs. Included with the purchase is one year of ProSupport. ProSupport can be bumped up to 2-year and 3-year service plans for an extra $215 and $330. The machine itself is made from carbon fiber and aluminum, and offers Gorilla Glass for durability. The battery is a 6-cell unit, while the audio is Waves Maxx Audio 4.0. The laptop measures in at just 6mm on its thinnest edge, and 18mm at its thickest point, which is still less than 3/4 of an inch. Dell offered this statement: “We’re super excited about the XPS 13 Laptop, Developer Edition, and want to thank all the developers who have been actively participating in helping us create a laptop designed specifically for them. Basically, we loaded a super sleek Dell machine with Ubuntu to give developers the essentials they want while staying true to our core values of openness and affordability. But the power of the community input really helped make this a big success.”
http://www.slashgear.com/dell-now-offering-xps-13-ultrabook-running-ubuntu-30259042/ I hope more OEM's starting making more PC's with Linux distros preinstalled. I will be very disappointed if 5 years from now Linux on the desktop isn't large enough for most active PC devs to make Linux versions of their games.
ProSupport can be bumped up to 2-year and 3-year service plans for an extra $215 and $330
Holy shit. That's a lot.
Holy shit. That's a lot.
I work at staples and our 2 year protection plans for a $500 laptop are $230 (for accidental damage coverage). [editline]lol what do i put here!?[/editline]
I'm too used to my OS to ever adapt in a permanent way to something like Ubuntu. I tried it once and couldn't figure out where the hell anything was.
I like how it costs $50 more than it would with Windows installed on it.
With Steam on the move to Linux i can see myself using Ubuntu or any other Linux Distros in the future. For now there is not much reason to use Linux other then that it is open source and free. Also that Windows can run everything which is limited on Linux
Just wondering, are Dell laptops really that good? I'm thinking of getting XPS 15.
Dell has released PC's made for Ubuntu in the past, it seems that now they have noticed the consumer public taking more of an interest in Linux OS. I'm not sure if it's smart move and how many people would really buy them.
Just wondering, are Dell laptops really that good? I'm thinking of getting XPS 15.
I remember avoiding them (their desktops at least) like the plague a few years ago, don't know if it's changed though.
Just wondering, are Dell laptops really that good? I'm thinking of getting XPS 15.
I got an XPS laptop around '08, it gave me nothing but trouble. Hardware wore out really quickly, it performed nowhere near as well as it should have with its specs, and there were some bad design choices too (IE: Aluminium casing around the keyboard, with a heatsink under the area where your palm rests when your left hand's on WASD, burnt the shit out of my hand).
The XPS 13 features a 13.3-inch display with a resolution of 1366 x 768
Ok stop, companies have to stop putting such low res screens into their laptops as this isn't enough especially for developers where it's nice to have a lot of rooms to work in.
Ok stop, companies have to stop putting such low res screens into their laptops as this isn't enough especially for developers where it's nice to have a lot of rooms to work in.
Worst offender I've ever seen though was a 17 inch laptop with that resolution.
Intel graphics, gross
You can get all sorts of dell products with ubuntu pre-installed... Whats new about this?
"13.3-inch display with a resolution of 1366 x 768" I wish laptop manufacturers would start giving them decent resolutions, fuck sake the common tablet has a better dpi.
Intel graphics, gross
Um, the latest generation of onboard that came with the Ivy Bridge CPUs is actually pretty good. I certainly wouldn't be happy with it at this price range, but there's little reason to outright dismiss Intel GPUs these days on consumer rigs.
Just wondering, are Dell laptops really that good? I have my 19inch screen at 1366x768, but it supports 1080. Thats just how I am I guess.
"The operating system is the latest and greatest Ubuntu version 12.04" Because 12.10 totally isn't out right now
Worst offender I've ever seen though was a 17 inch laptop with that resolution.
Appeal to lowest common denominator- grandma and grandpa. They know what an inch is. They don't know what a pixel is. Buying a laptop at Best Buy is such bullshit for this reason. I bought a laptop from TigerDirect specifically for its 1600x900 screen and it was only $500
You can get all sorts of dell products with ubuntu pre-installed... Whats new about this?
No you can't. You used to but recently they outright stopped. I damn tried to get one. I spoke to a sales associate and he said he was not informed of the reason, but still I found a shitty, overpriced Ubuntu laptop running an old version on the Business site though.
Intel graphics, gross
I was amazed i could run Blood Money on a decent Frame rate on my Intel Graphics 3000
Just wondering, are Dell laptops really that good? I'm thinking of getting XPS 15.
I have an XPS 15 and I love it
Just wondering, are Dell laptops really that good? I'm thinking of getting XPS 15.
I had my XPS for two years before the motherboard finally fried. However that wasn't Dell's fault, Nvidia was trying out a new chipset and it caused massive heat issues. But I loved that damn laptop to death.
I have my 19inch screen at 1366x768, but it supports 1080. Thats just how I am I guess.
What is wrong with you?

Very few people buy them though.
Didn't something like this happen?
"The operating system is the latest and greatest Ubuntu version 12.04" Because 12.10 totally isn't out right now
If you're a hardware-selling business, you don't jump software every 6 months, you stick to LTS. Windows works fine for OEMs because they bring out a new version at like a minimum of every 3 years, but Linux grows exponentially every 2 months, so they literally have to stick with the LTS releases.
You would think when you buy something that expensive, you would check to see if it actually runs Windows, and not blindly click checkout without knowing what your getting.
