The owner of a fertilizer plant that exploded last week killing 14 people and destroying dozens of homes and an apartment complex in a tiny Texas town is being sued by a single mom and by several insurance companies.
Two lawsuits, filed in McLennan County district court, have accused Adair Grain, Inc, the parent company of West Fertilizer Co, of negligence, according to copies of the filings provided by the court on Tuesday.
The company "was negligent in the operation of its facility, creating an unreasonably dangerous condition, which led to the fire and explosion," said a lawsuit filed on Friday by insurance companies on behalf of individuals, two churches, and businesses including a Chevrolet car dealer and a bakery.
Was there a thread?
This seems like it should've made the news.

It's been all over the news a few days ago. It was the leading story behind the Boston bombings.

The lawsuit or West, Texas blowing up?
West has been all over the news lately, you must be living under a rock.
Their Czech bakery has amazing pastries, I've been going there since 1991. I donated some money to the Red Cross to help them out.
well didn't the plant have over the legal limit of fertilizer? So assuming damage was done to her house she has grounds to sue?

It was something like over 1000 pounds over the legal limit of fertilizer.

All i ever hear about are the Boston bombings so it probably slipped my mind or something i guess.
The plant explosion took out nearly half the town, I'm pretty sure nearly everyone that lives there has a right to sue for something.
Was the root cause of the original fire found yet?
the last time the place was inspected was 1985, cause you know don't tread on me
the last time the place was inspected was 1985, cause you know don't tread on me
I read somewhere that it was last inspected in 06', but only because someone smelt something odd.
Some crazy part of me thought plants like this were inspected at least once every year, guess not.
It was something like over 1000 pounds over the legal limit of fertilizer.
That's sort of a meaningless value by itself. 1000 pounds over a limit of what? One hundred? Ten million? Ten thousand?
Maybe I missed it but what was the legal limit?
EDIT:
Obviously there's no excuse for going over the limits, but knowing what they are gives you a metric for how egregious the offense is.

I didn't know that. The Boston Bombings have pretty much eclipsed the Texas fertilizer plant explosion, so I haven't heard anything about it other than it happened.
No, it was the "Florida ..." news who eclipsed the FP news section.
There was obviously some level of negligence on behalf of not only the owner, but the government regulatory commission.

I'm pretty sure OSHA is supposed to check at least every year. Someone is in deep shit.
Wasn't this essentially the plotline of Killing Floor's halloween event last year?
As soon as I heard about this on the news I thought to myself "Someone is getting their ass sued"
