Welp, there was a 7.0 Magnitude Earthquake off the coast of Japan, no danger of a tsunami. Sucks to be in Japan. No real article yet... Japan is getting more pounded than a hooker in Las Vegas lately.
Poor Japan :(
Ok? Japan is built for this stuff... and it's on a fault. Just watch as people over-sensationalize. Oops... too late.
Just because Japan had a big 9.4 quake, doesn't mean a 7.0 is that bad Japan is build for quakes, its on a fucking fault for gods sake. This isn't real news at all. Quakes are extremely common there.

I've lived through at least 2 earthquakes, being in Washington State. They are scary for a minute until it ends. Then you laugh it off and can talk to your friends about "where you were when the earthquake hit". If it doesn't cause much damage, then it's actually sort of exciting.

Besides, the title is misleading. The epicentre is really far from Japan. It was only a magnitude 2 to 4 in the parts of Japan that were hit, which is nothing at all. They don't talk about it on TV here either, for a good reason. There's no danger of a tsunami, so this is really just business as usual.

Don't worry guys, it's going to be fine. Also, here's a permalink: http://www.jma.go.jp/en/quake/20120101143459391-011428.html (JMA has an English language version, there's no need to translate)

Because as far as we know, nothing did happen. If a later source tells us there were injuries or damages, that's a whole different story. But so far there is nothing to get all excited about.

Oh for fucks sake guys, read the damn thread before replying. Earthquakes hit Japan a LOT. The vast majority of them do no damage. This was one of those. It sounds scary because it was a magnitude 7 at the epicentre. But the epicentre was quite far from the Japanese islands. Please calm down.
Hey guys before you post about how I'm an asshole, actually read these quotes. Don't be brainless please.
What a way to start the year... :smith:
You gotta be shitting me.
Seriously? Well, this is a shit way to start off the year. Nothing on BBC yet, but the USGS is pretty clear. Here's hoping it's not bad.
http://www.jma.go.jp/jp/quake/ Use chrome to translate, at the bottom it also says no fear of tsuanami. That takes a load off
What a bad new years day for them.
Ok? Japan is built for this stuff... and it's on a fault. Just watch as people over-sensationalize. Oops... too late.
Class act.
It's almost been a year since the disaster :X
Ok? Japan is built for this stuff... and it's on a fault. Just watch as people over-sensationalize. Oops... too late.
But the people aren't.
Damn Japan keeps getting hit with the worst luck
atleast they don't have to rebuild everything
http://www.jma.go.jp/jp/quake/ Use chrome to translate, at the bottom it also says no fear of tsuanami. That takes a load off
Does anybody know if it was far enough off the coast so as not to damage the island?
What a bad new years eve for them.
New years Day
Class act.
Just because Japan had a big 9.4 quake, doesn't mean a 7.0 is that bad Japan is build for quakes, its on a fucking fault for gods sake. This isn't real news at all. Quakes are extremely common there.
New years Day
Fixed.
Wow again? This is terrible, especially to start a new year off
Only two towns or 100,000 people would've felt it in any sort of severity according to the USGS, and even those towns would've had no damage. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/pager/events/us/c0007fbh/index.html There's a reason why it's not in the news. It's just another earthquake.
Shaking up the new year I see.
Does anybody know if it was far enough off the coast so as not to damage the island?
I'd think they felt it, but damage wise it was probably really minor. Few broken dishes and such.
It's obvious that the president was partying in the whitehouse for new years and someone accidentally hit the secret earthquake generator button
That's the shittiest way to start off a new year I've ever seen.
Welcome to 2012?
Welcome to 2012?
Well, the world is meant to end...

Where's your common sense and human empathy?
So basically, you're telling us not to give a shit even if people's lives are ruined and possibly lost just because Japan gets earthquakes regularly? Where's your common sense and human empathy?
Are you daft or just mentally insane? This isn't New York City... Japan is very easily able to manage a 7 quake, even the reactors and everything are build VERY strictly for this kind of stuff. I have more common sense than you, clearly. The most that will happen is people will glance about a little and loose focus... then get back with their lives. Burn and smolder in collapsing buildings? Absolutely impossible. If it was bigger, and actually was a threat, yes, I'd be afraid, am I? No, it's not a threat. I'm pretty sure by now, considering nothing else was reported... NOTHING HAPPENED.
Wow. Hopefully a tsunami doesn't happen as a result.
Wow. Hopefully a tsunami doesn't happen as a result.
Rtft, it won't.
