So I'm thinking about getting an upgrade soon. Not a complete upgrade but just a CPU and some new RAM. Lately I haven't been keeping up with all the new hardware coming out so I'm sure there is someone who can point me in the right direction. I have a budget around ~250-300ish USD, I would be buying these from newegg as I live in the good ol' US of A
So back to the main point, right now I have an AMD 8450 x3 at 2.1 GHZ along with some basic Kingston DDR2 RAM. Now as more and more games are coming out I am wondering what would be a decent CPU to purchase. I am looking for at least quad core and 4 GB of RAM.
Right now I have the Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 motherboard with a 700 south bridge so I cannot unlock any cores like the AMD 555 dual core. I would like to keep with AMD seeing as Intel is so much for a simple Core 2 Duo.
I do not have enough money for a whole new motherboard unless it would be really worth getting a new motherboard and use my current for a new pc. Current power supply is This a long with a 4870 from sapphire. So my main purpose of this thread is to ask you, Facepunch, what is a good upgrade in my situation? Thank you guys
You could upgrade your processor to a phenom II 920
[editline]12:59AM[/editline]
the 4870 you have, providing I read your post correctly, should last you a bit. Upgrade your processor.
Also: I can't seem to find the 920 on newegg.
Hmm what about the 940? I also need help on finding a nice ram set.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103471
Then some generic DDR2 RAM.
Okay so I will get the 940 but instead of some generic RAM I would really like to get some that I can OC that black edition to. I have the Arctic Cooler Freezer 64 pro for so that should be enough to OC at least ~300 MHZ right?
Isn't the 940 am3?
[editline]01:34AM[/editline]
oh guess its not go for it then
My motherboard is AM3 compatible so it should work anyway.
That PSU only has a 4 pin CPU power connector. I wouldn't recommend OCing with that PSU.
Okay I guess you are right until I can get a new PSU.

He should be fine he won't be doing any heavy overclocking.
Okay well thanks, I am gonna get the 940. But I still would like a recommendation on some RAM that can I can OC the CPU for when I can pick up a new PSU.

Also you can overclock the cpu.
You can overclock just fine with 4-pin CPU power. You just wont get any amazing results. At the very least you could overclock until you hit the voltage barrier. Its different between each CPU, but at the very least you can get a small bump up with minimal power and heat increase.

You don't need a new PSU just to overlcock if thats what you're doing. But if you still want to we can make a few recommendations.

I also recommend the Corsair RAM posted above.
That RAM looks nice I'll look into it. Also getting a new PSU isn't on my top priority for upgrades since it's working perfectly fine.
