I should reinstall this, I stopped playing well after all my friends did because I was bored of the World Story stuff that just cycled over and over again.

Except the Fun Box throwback or whatever the hell it was called. That thing was amazing. For like a solid week I was just coming home from work and playing GW2 then going to bed :v:
You can grab the base game for just 10 bucks during this weekend over at http://buy.guildwars2.com/
Haven't touched a MMO since the first GW, but I'm willing to give GW2 a try. Apparently it's quite friendly towards the casual player, so it doesn't require huge time investments.

regardless of what anyone says, gw2 is still a very grindy game
and nothing like gw1 for that matter
Have they added GvG's yet? The thing that made everyone love guild wars?

Nah, but that's coming back in the expansion, surprisingly.
Not a fan of green stuff or salad faces, probably won't be getting this till it goes on sale.

It is on sale currently, for 10 bucks I might add.

I loved Guild Wars because of the skill system. Essentially you have 8 skill slots and there is like 70-109 normal skills and 15-36 elite skills per class and you can choose a secondary class which allows you to use the secondary class' normal skills.
Huge synergy potential alone but the beauty comes from teamwork with others.
For PvE, add in bots with modifiable skill sets or organize with other players (up to 8 in the party usually) and you have a rolling army capable mowing down groups of strong enemies if everyone works together modestly. If you specialize your skills for certain areas and/or enemies, teamwork becomes an art and it's not that hard achieving such a fine degree of teamwork either.
For PvP, you have some loose meta but generally there is level of rock, paper, scissors with support. Skillful players are capable in doing match ups in a fashion which suits them the best (sometimes no match up at all but they are not without teeth or help).
While it does have "roles" which GW2 team tries to avoid at all costs, it promotes teamwork while providing some redundancy via bots or pub PvP matches. Not to mention you could make a build you could call your own (and still works pretty well).
What I love most of all is the skills are used by monsters in a signature way. No generic attacks using conditions. There are still special attacks for special monsters.
I also love collecting skills from said monsters (gotta catch'em all) and doing iterative trial and error with skill combinations. Granted, some skills are not used at all by the general populace but I like they exist in case you ever need such a skill.
tl;dr: I'll be honest, I've never done a GvG but I think the soul of Guild Wars 1 is in the skill system and its implications on PvE and PvP in general, not just GvG.

Yeah but at least getting to max level isn't grindy at all.

its very boring though
its very boring though
Eh, I never found it too boring. Pop to level 10 or 20 real quick in a starter area, then just play a few days of WvW.
Yeah but at least getting to max level isn't grindy at all.
i wouldnt know really, i bought into the hype (because everyone was, and because i massively enjoyed gw1) and played until maybe level 26-30 where i just got really tired of the game (it also felt like it took way too long). way too many repetative quests, a rather dull skill system and immersion lost as 100 people just bash buttons to kill the same boss
i dunno... i didn't like the game.
its very boring though
hardly. The world design in this game is very good. Exploring and finding hidden areas or npcs that people would miss because they just blitz past the content is very satisfying.
The game does a lot for the people who will take the time to smell the roses.

When you get to end-game or open world bosses the game does begin to feel like your average MMO grindfest, but levelling doesn't have to be boring at all. If you play GW2 with the intention of doing boring grinds, you will find it boring.
I loved the game until they slaughtered or ignored everything I liked to do, so I haven't played in ages.
I found leveling utterly boring because, like most MMO's now, everything is too easy. I never had a need for anyone else out in the wilds to simply progress and it began to feel like an exercise in pointlessness -- questing and killing because ArenaNet decided you couldn't just start at max level. With the general game so easy there's little point in having to level other than needing the padding.
Their pricing model is still the best though and people that haven't been in the genre for almost two decades will love the ease of access it has. For $10 it's worth getting if only because you'll never need to bother with subscriptions at later dates when you become an off-and-on player.

That's gw2, not the expansion.
you all say grinding in this is a chore, but exploring the world is a thrill and gorgeous to probe every book and cranny

i explored the areas and stuff on my first character, was cool
and then i realized that with the stupid trait system i'd either have to shell out 100+ gold or go do the exact same thing with other characters, meaning i couldn't run dungeons with any of my alts unless i wanted to sit down and churn out levels. when you're doing it for the exploration the first time its fun, but afterwards when you want to try out other characters in dungeons you can't. the only saving grace is that pvp gives out tomes of knowledges, allowing you to play any character you want and still get levels for pve content; only problem is that even after toming a character to 80 you have to go back to the first point, which is that the trait system is bollocks
I don't mind grinding in mmos, but theres something about this game in particular that makes grinding even more boring
Like grinding for area completion but not being able to find that last heart or vista
you all say grinding in this is a chore, but exploring the world is a thrill and gorgeous to probe every book and cranny
It's possible that the game is actually both. Exploring the world is fun and jumping puzzles were cool and making progress without doing traditional MMO stuff is always enjoyable but the meat and potatoes of the leveling experience is filling bars with centaur corpses and garbage.
Had a really fun time exploring and finding secrets while playing this with friends but we all got bored to tears by the combat
Had a really fun time exploring and finding secrets while playing this with friends but we all got bored to tears by the combat
PvE combat gets boring because you can do well with a set of spell cycles. It gets repetitive.
WvW on the other hand, if you're the kind of person who really gets into it. Going 1v1 against people, or getting a couple of friends who like to evolve and nail down the combat and going up against a same size group of a bigger group is the most kind of adrenaline-rush experience I've ever had in an online game.
I love my thief in WvW, because it is possible to dance around enemies and take down multiple players. I like the aspect of resource managing your own spells and cooldowns, and if you have a friend, combo your spells with their fields.
Also getting a group of experienced players together and steamrolling larger size group gives me a huge b...ego.

GW2 gets pretty boring if you play it casually, but really interesting if you give the "meta" a go.
