Thousands of Chinese nationals living or on business in Vietnam have already fled the country amid anti-China riots, which were sparked by a tense standoff between Chinese and Vietnamese naval ships near a Chinese oil rig in disputed waters off the Paracel Islands in the South China Sea on May 4. The Chinese foreign ministry confirmed Friday that at least two Chinese nationals have been killed and nearly a hundred were injured during violent protests last week that saw dozens of Chinese, Taiwanese and Hong Kong factories set on fire. The UK's Guardian claims as many as 21 people have died.
WantChinaTimes
Vietnam ain't the kind of place China wants to be fighting in, especially if they end up losing more than the gain through a fight. Their economy is fragile as it is
If something did happen in Vietnam and Vietnam is in trouble, I'm dropping everything and flyin' over.
Vietnam ain't the kind of place China wants to be fighting in, especially if they end up losing more than the gain through a fight. Their economy is fragile as it is
They've actually fought the Chinese twice after the Vietnam War and managed to hold their ground against the PLA (who had just helped them beat the United States out of Vietnam, along with Soviet advisors). Is the Vietnamese military as strong as it was? Probably not, honestly.
Sounds like China's trying to protect ethnic Chinese living in Vietnam.
If there was a fight, itd be hilariously one sided.
The sources are kinda sketchy but images have appeared on the internet. Not sure if they really are from now or from later but I'll post them anyway. Perhaps a reaction of the recent anti-china/business riots.
Sounds like China's trying to protect ethnic Chinese living in Vietnam.
It's more likely than you think, 21 people were killed in the riots that targeted Chinese people, but South Koreans, Japanese and Taiwanese got targeted as well.
Nobody invades Vietnam. Not the Americans, not the Ming Dynasty and not the Mongols. The french did though...
How'd that work out for them?
How'd that work out for them?
they took over and ruled it for about 70 years
Nobody invades Vietnam. Not the Americans, not the Ming Dynasty and not the Mongols. The french did though...
uhh, America never invaded Vietnam. South Vietnam was a sovereign country and Americans never set foot in North Vietnam.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_War
You mean the war where Americans assisted the nation of South Vietnam against an invading North Vietnam and never invaded North Vietnam? Did you even bother reading your own wikipedia post?
uhh, America never invaded Vietnam. South Vietnam was a sovereign country and Americans never set foot in North Vietnam.
Seeing as its one country now they technically did.
You're arguing over pointless semantics, the US landed hundreds of thousands of troops on foreign soil (AKA an invasion) and fully intended to wipe out the North.
There was never any intention to wipe out the north especially after Mao personally pledging to support North Vietnam in the case of American invasion. Especially seeing how both countries had nuclear weapons at that point. America never invaded South Vietnam. Calling that an invasion is as silly as calling the thousands of Americans in Japan an invasion. The closest America had gotten to invading North Vietnam would be bombing it with tons of B-52s in things like Operation Linebacker. China however with 邓 blowing things up all over the place several years after the Americans left can be called an invasion. Had America actually invaded the then North Vietnam with actual people on the ground rampaging all over the place then you probably would have seen the Chinese back up their words with an invasion. The Chinese propaganda being plastered all over China backs this up as well, they were fully commited to responding to an American invasion. It's not as if random Chinese people would've had a problem with going to Vietnam either seeing how this was during the cultural revolution. Not to mention as I said ealier they ended up invading Vietnam themselves just a couple years down the line.
Oh fuck I still have family in Vietnam. I hope this blows over.
wait, there's tension between nam and china? My uncle lives there, can we not fight?
Last time Vietnam and China traded blows China wasn't exactly successful I doubt China will actually do anything though.
You're arguing over pointless semantics, the US landed hundreds of thousands of troops on foreign soil (AKA an invasion) and fully intended to wipe out the North.
then explain why north vietnam conquered the south was it in self defense?
Am I the only one who thinks it a little weird to write "chinese national". If the article is about tensions between Vietnam and China I'm gonna assume that when they use the word chinese they are referring to chinese citizens. I'm probably just nit picking.

Anyone think it a bit more disconcerting than usual considering the business with Russia/Ukraine alongside China's complete lack of comment or action on the matter? This looks eerily similar to what Russia is doing.
