Valve is pleased to announce the preview of the next SteamOS release, codenamed "brewmaster" and based on the latest Debian 8.1 stable release.
Please note that this is a very early preview release and we have done only limited hardware compatibility and functional testing. We are releasing this early to get feedback from the community. You should not install brewmaster on any machine containing data you are not prepared to lose completely.
Although there are a lot of changes under the covers, the overall functionality and experience of brewmaster is the same as alchemist and most of the SteamOS FAQ applies to both releases.
does it pull me a wicked pint or something
It fragments your data into 3 pieces and then two of them die.

Does that mean Valve will change it's color scheme two weeks later?
Love how companies are using their videogame characters to name shit.
Microsoft "Spartan" and "Cortana"
Now Valve with "Brewmaster" (Hero from Dota 2)
if you can't read: this current 'release' doesn't work at all on AMD video cards and is extremely unstable. I have no idea why they even bothered to push this to a release branch given the current condition of it....

A preview release has the intention of making it a stable release.
Also, everybody is warned, the risk is known, it is just there to make it better.
The testers have far more hardware combinations than any test lab, exposing these things.
Starting it off right with Jessie, best damn distro IMO.
I take it they switched it over to systemd, then? That'll be good for the general consumers, they'll start whining if the machine takes too long to boot up.

That's a funny way to spell Arch Linux.

Valve software engineers hard at work on Steambox:

That's literally crazy for something that's intended to eventually target the lowest common denominator regarding computer users.

you're never going to make a truly stable OS if you don't have thousands of testers, if not more

That's a funny way to spell Void Linux.
[editline]I expected another editor war, not a distro war.[/editline]
Sometimes it'd just be nice if the Steam client was less dependent on what it runs in (and doesn't play too well on some floating window managers).
I wonder if they are following in the footsteps of Android release naming patterns (alphabetical desserts) and using Dota characters in alphabetical order.
For all we know there was an internal Abaddon (or some other A hero) release.
Q. How does this affect my existing SteamOS alchemist installation?
A. There is no change to alchemist support yet. For now, we will continue updating alchemist with the relevant security updates and Steam will continue to support alchemist. At some point we will drop support for alchemist and only support brewmaster.
seems like it

Oh... didn't realize it was a known thing haha my bad.
Makes sense, it is a great way to clearly delineate what version you're talking about, whether its the devs talking or users.
