I'm planning on buying an SSD, but they're still pretty expensive. Maybe sometime after Christmas.
Bought an SSD in 2011, prices have halved by now and even then it was worth it.
I brought a second SSD after I got one in 2011, this new drive is almost 2 times as fast as the one that I originally brought and bigger for the same price
I personally recommend the Samsung 840 256GB or 512GB (not the 128GB). They're reasonably priced and, at least when I bought mine last year, some of the fastest consumer drives on the market.
I bought a 128 gb samsung about a year ago for 65 bucks. I installed my os and any games i currently play onto it and everything else onto another drive. this one drive was almost 3x as fast as my raid 0 setup
I got a Sandisk Extreme II for $170, aside from my actual laptop being shitty and taking forever to boot, the programs I run are fucking incredibly fast i love it
I have a free spot in my laptop for an SSD. Maybe I'll get one during the summer, but right now, unemployment = unenjoyment.
The main reason I haven't looked into SSDs is due to the life span. Anyone know if they've improved on all that yet? If it had say, a 6 year life span, I'd buy one for sure, but they're reportedly not that great.

http://www.dealzon.com/storage/ssd has some great deals for SSD's, though there are only 3 active right now, but there are new deals daily, or at least whenever new deals come into existence, so yeah.

Maybe next-gen HDs will have better lifetimes and write speeds.

Here's a really good article explaining why: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6459/samsung-ssd-840-testing-the-endurance-of-tlc-nand.
Not sure I want an SSD. I have a 1TB hard drive, and I certainly don't want to downgrade. And doing RAID or splitting my files between two drives sounds like more trouble than its worth. Think I might just get a hybrid drive.

Hybrid drives are good compromise between speed and storage but they wont be near as fast as an SSD
About to buy this one. https://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Storage/SSDs/100GB+-+180GB+SSD/Corsair+Force+LS+Series+120GB+2.5%22+SATA+6Gb%2Fs+Solid+State+Hard+Drive+%28CSSD-F120GBLS%29+?productId=57685 Great price for anyone looking to pick one up. Read/Write are perfect
SSDs are ridiculously expensive. I don't think I'll get one for another 3 or 4 years because of how much they cost, I'd rather have a decently sized hdd first.
Until they get in the similar price range as normal harddrives i'll pass i have my computer on 24/7 and all my programs start instantly no point in having an ssd really

That's not calculated the way it actually works. I mean, sure, if you halt writing on your SSD, it may very well last 10+ years, but the thought of having to be so careful all the time, leaving the possibility of it to suddenly fail scares me. There must be new technologies on the horizon. I hope.

I've never had a platter HDD last me 10 years either so Admittedly part of that is ever increasing storage space and requirements and it'll be the same for SSDs but still

I have 2, a 512GB Samsung Pro 840 and the 256GB version for work... I might buy another 512GB one for Steam though.
I'll buy an SSD when I can get 2tb for $150. Otherwise, for me personally there's no use in it.

Aren't SSDs basically HDD with better performance or am I missing a thing or two here?

[editline]15th November 2013[/editline]
Aren't SSDs basically HDD with better performance or am I missing a thing or two here?
They are two completely different storage mediums. One has a big magnetic disk that spins at thousands of rounds per minute along with a mechanical arm, and the other has no moving parts at all.
Aren't SSDs basically HDD with better performance or am I missing a thing or two here?
Better performing, no noise or vibrations, and you can't break them from shock damage.
Better performing, no noise or vibrations, and you can't break them from shock damage.
I think that's a bit misleading, they can still be broken it's just harder :v:
I swap a mechanical HDD in a laptop in a matter of minutes after purchase, keeps the costs down but adds more hours to the battery and speed. I love it so much. I use the SSDs as a boot drive too. In the house there are 3 machines that use Crucial M4s and 1 uses a Samsung 840 Non-Pro 250GB SSD.
