When it was time to say goodbye, she was given a hero's farewell.
Firefighters and rescue workers lined the sidewalk as her body, draped in an American flag, was carried out. Tears streaked down some faces.
Bretagne, believed to be the last surviving 9/11 Ground Zero search dog, was euthanized Monday.
The golden retriever was 16. Old age had slowed her down, and it was time to put her to sleep.
So, the firefighters at the Cy-Fair Fire Department in Harris County, Texas, lined the path up to the Fairfield Animal Hospital, as her owner, Denise Corliss, walked her in to be put to sleep.

Died a true hero.
Bretagne was such a cutie.
And also a badass.
:terrists:
what happened to the bald eagle emoticon.
Good girl.
Sad news. I remember posting last year about her.

Man I came here for news not a euthanasia flashback.
She lived a long life, especially for a golden retriever.
My dog will be 16 next year.
They put her to sleep because of old age? That's fucked up.

bigger dogs particularly develop a lot of problems as they age.
I lost my golden retriever one day, he was having issues walking, but was alright for a while.
then one day he suddenly had a hard to getting up.
Its far worse putting pets through suffering, trust me

would you rather the dog lives their last few months in excruciating pain as their condition just gets worse and worse, or painlessly and humanely be put out of their misery so they don't feel any more pain?

My dads legs don't work well anymore he has to take medicine otherwise they cause him tremendous pain even with the medicine doing more then walking is a problem for him afaik he dosent want to kill himself because of it.

But animals aren't people. They can't communicate or have thoughts on the same level and so we're ultimately their decision makers. Not to mention that animal treatment costs can be as much as hospital bills, treatments which usually only extend their lives by a few months to a year at most.
It's not pretty, but it's logical.
