I'm talking like a retard because I feel like one.
I've looked everywhere for a solution, and haven't found one all day, hoping you guys had some sort of idea.
I tried to install linux, but I gave it too much space so I re-installed it.
Afterwards, I try to open Windows XP, and I get this:
System is unable to boot, missing file hal.dll.
Okay, sure. So I look online, and try putting in a new hal.dll, but to no avail.
I put back the old hal.dll and look online for the solution. They say I have to use the Windows Recovery Console and type bootcfg /rebuild. Simple enough.
That's when the real fun begins. The console tells me I can't run bootcfg without first running chkdsk. So I do that, and get the delightful error message of:
"Volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems."
So I go into linux. The strange thing is, I can view ALL of my windows files. If the drive is so screwed over, why is it I can still view those files?
tl;dr: Computer got broke real bad, what can I do, barring re-installation of Windows.
Any and all help appreciated.
Backup and reinstall, what's the problem with it
What version and Service Pack was this XP? Was this hal.dll you downloaded the same version as yours? If you still have the disk try a sfc.exe /scannow
Try reinstalling it again.
