The first French weapons from a $3bn Saudi-funded programme will arrive in Lebanon as allies seek to bolster the country's defences against armed groups pressing along its Syrian border.
Anti-tank guided missiles were set to arrive at an air force base in Beirut on Monday, overseen by Jean-Yves Le Drian, French defence minister, and his Lebanese counterpart, Samir Mokbel.
France is expected to deliver 250 combat and transport vehicles, seven Cougar helicopters, three small corvette warships and a range of surveillance and communications equipment over four years as part of the $3bn modernisation programme.
It is being entirely funded by Saudi Arabia, which is keen to see Lebanon's army defend its borders against armed groups, particularly the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front, instead of leaving the job to Hezbollah fighters, who are backed by its regional rival, Iran.
The contract also promises seven years of training for the 70,000-strong Lebanese army and 10 years of equipment maintenance.
You know where I said in another thread it might be a good idea to stay of the mess in the middle east?
Here another good reason. Sell them equipment and make some profit.

ya but that doesn't mean that we have control of when they use that equipment, selling smart-bombs and bunker-busters to the saudi's will only embolden them to make a strike on iran's nuclear program. controlling what arms they buy though gives us substantial leverage though like egypt has not had any wars with israel since we started arming them and all the other countries that used to gang up on them

So... let's say you're in charge of your country, and your next door neighbor is dealing with an extremely threatening insurgent situation on their border, which could cause serious problems for you. So if 'paying poor buffer countries to fight the war so you don't have to' is wrong, what's your game plan here?
I guess they could negotiate to station their own troops there, and then Lebanon would become dependent on Saudi Arabia to provide security, giving Saudi Arabia enormous leverage in any sort of negotiations. Is that really better than just giving them weapons to defend themselves with?
Oh Saudi Arabia, you've learned so much from papa England and grown up so fast.

Lebanon is two countries away from Saudi Arabia. I think it's less of that and more of Saudi Arabia trying to expand its sphere of influence by getting on their good side.
thanks saudi arabia!!!
in b4 saudi arabian coup
At least it's a group giving weapons to a sovereign state and not a poorly organized rebel faction.

Given how integrated Hezbollah is in Lebanon, I would not be surprised if some of that hardware fell into their hands.
