I read the ("Death of Garfield?") post a couple of days ago and was intrigued because I was scheduled to have a business meeting with Jim Davis in just a couple of days (I work for Hallmark). Well, I had that meeting at Paws (Davis' company) yesterday and I used the opportunity to ask him just exactly what he had in mind when he wrote those strips. The answer was simple. He was not inspired by any cartoon (though I could certainly see why the other commenter might believe so). Garfield is NOT dead, nor is he starving to death (Jim actually laughed loudly when I suggested these theories). It was simply a week before Halloween and Jim wanted to do something legitimately scary, as opposed to Halloween-scary. "Ghosts aren't scary..." he told me before explaining that before writing the strips he went around to everyone he knew and asked them what truly scared them. The answer he got most often was "being alone" or "dying alone". Just that simple.
(It was on YTMND so I thought NEDM...)
It was quite depressing, until it turned out to be an imagination, even though it turned out to be an imagination

The Lasagna finally killed him.
im pretty sure the last 3 panels show that he didnt die, and that it was just his imagination....or that he died and is now in a better place where he gets breakfast
That was fucking depressing... Shit

Watch the overanalyzation of Calvin and Hobbes on there.
What if Garfield is really just a cat living in and abandoned house. He ran from his abusive owner Jon. Every day Garfield would be beaten within an inch of his life, and then thrown out so that Odie could get a new chew toy for a day. Garfield ran, and hid in an abandoned house, He made up better kinder versions of his previous owner and dog. In his imagination, hes an overfed, lazy house-cat. But in the real world, hes slowly withering away from lack of food.

The last comic made with him going sledding, although not proven was theorized that he died while sledding
Even if you don't believe the theory the fact that it was the last comic is depressing itself.
