Peugeot in talks to buy GM's Vauxhall and Opel business
France's PSA Group, maker of Peugeot and Citroen cars, is in talks about taking over General Motors' (GM) loss-making European business Opel.
PSA, which already works with GM in Europe on several projects, said a takeover was among "numerous strategic initiatives" being considered.
Any deal would involve Opel's UK arm Vauxhall, which employs 4,500 staff at plants at Ellesmere Port and Luton.
Unite union leader Len McCluskey said he wanted urgent talks with GM.

:vomit:
First Saab, now this.
GM should have never set foot in Europe, everything they touched eventually dies or turns to shit.
How bad is this? My parents have always bought Opel/Vauxhall.

Pegeouts build-quality is dubious at best. They're nice cars with a lot of space in them, but aren't the most reliable of cars.
Either nothing will change, or production costs will be cut, meaning the quality of Opel/Vauxhall cars will fall.

So status quo or status quo?

They have that image, but for quite a while now Peugeot and Citroen cars have been reasonably reliable. In every European car reliability index I saw there have been plenty of PSA cars in the top 100, a lot of them rating better than equivalent Japanese cars.
Until my most recent Ibiza I've always driven a Peugeot or Citroen and never had any serious trouble with them. And they were always extremely roomy and comfortable.
Renault is supposed to still be crap though.

Realistically all modern cars are very reliable. I don't think the finish on French cars (along with Vauxhall/Opel) is as good as other brands, but they're cheap, reliable, practical run-a-rounds. Bits of rattling plastic here or there don't bother the target market.
Even repairing french cars is cheap, parts are everywhere and independent garages deal with them often so labour tends to be cheap too.

But GM has owned Opel since 1929?

Absolutely. I drive a Peugeot myself, and parts are never hard to come by when you need them.
yo what's wrong with peugeot
most of them might look boring but they're really reliable most of the time
(and besides, it's not peugeot that's looking to buy opels, it's Groupe PSA)

They aren't going to fall to pieces like they did in the 1970s, but there are still huge gaps in reliability between different car manufacturers, which can add up into thousands of dollars in maintenance if you own the car to something like 150,000 miles.
