Dean Hall intends to leave developer Bohemia and step down as leader of his hit video game DayZ by the end of the year, Eurogamer can exclusively reveal. The game he created will be left in the hands of the team he leads today.

"I am a grenade," he begun
I guess he got demoted from rocket then.
I wonder what happened... I mean I feel like he was making bank so something must've happened to make him want to stop.
Maybe disillusioned with the fact that nobody wants to play the game as intended and all the servers are just 24/7 day respawn with gear start with max gear free blood no pvp.

The only thing I've seen in my ~60 hours played in Standalone is the 24/7 day and "no PvP." There's no spawn with max gear because all of the current servers are on the public HIVE anyways.

Only a matter of time. And 24/7 day and no pvp is enough for me to say "Fuck the DayZ community"

Trust me, I love DayZ standalone for the hive server thing. No more dodgy spawning with max gear and shit.
This is really really bad for Dayz. I just know it.

no PvP servers? What, every server I found was PvP, yes they are 24/7 day which I have no problem with.

I would say that 24/7 day ruins the game, but there is no half decent way to create lights during night and flashlights shine through buildings which also fucks you over, as well as the headlamps really not working properly.. the game isn't really meant to be played at night yet to be honest.

Natural career progression? If he stays at BI he will just end up working on DayZ till it dies. At least if he starts his own studio he can (again) do whatever he wants.
Also remember how he advertised a red faction style underground building system, that sounded really cool and we never ended up seeing it :|
edit: ow my automerge
I'm actually looking forward to seeing what happens next year. Rocket has been the dayz posterboy who's adored by fans much like Gabe or how notch was in the early days, it'll be interesting to see how this develops without him on command.
I feel like DayZ is a fundamentally flawed concept,
well at least someone said it
It's flawed in the sense that it's not really a game, it's more or less a sandbox with a bunch of guns and stuff like that.
no PvP servers? What, every server I found was PvP, yes they are 24/7 day which I have no problem with.
I meant the servers were called "no PvP." As in, there were servers with rules against PvP combat, not that there were no PvP servers.

I see this a lot but I still don't understand why people complain about this. Back in the mod there was both a main public "hive" which was vanilla DayZ and had your character data saved across all public hive servers, and private "hives" that were modded in some way, like better loot, more vehicles, spawns halfway through the map, starting gear, etc. The character data in those servers was only saved there, meaning that you couldn't get that gear to a "public hive" server, and you could filter them out using any decent server browser, so why do people who like "the public hive experience" complain so much about them?

Well it's named DayZ
well at least it was only 30 dollars wasted!
theres just one big problem i see with dayz.
The engine, it sucks for this, no physics whatsoever, everything clunky as fuck, like playing with cheap plastic action figures, everything that rests on the engine sucks and will suck, the combat, the melee, everything is laughable to be honest.
A concept like dayz will only work while the animations and motion of the entire game feels smooth and lays on a physics living interactive world...and good online connectivity, good god, that fucking red chain.
Didn't he want to climb K2? This might be a leave to go ahead and do that.
It was known for quite some time that he was only planning on being part of the first year of development. Not really a surprise.
DayZ still has plenty of time to improve under his guidance. They've been churning out weekly updates, adding content and fixing bugs. I expect them to be much closer to a complete game by the end of the year.

Everest, although I think he climbed k2 at some point

Arguing something isn't a game is so stupid. It's irrelevant to the discussion.

adding content like the SKS which has been in the game files as a useable firearm since release?

It's probably because traveling from NZ to Czech is a huge fucking ordeal.

Arma is also only a sandbox with guns and stuff like that.
I think people in this thread need to read his latest statement made 3 hours ago.
To clarify a couple of important points:
I'm still the project lead of DayZ, and there are currently no plans I'm aware of to replace me in that role.
*Ultimately, even if I did leave - DayZ belongs to Bohemia and there is a very large and ever-growing team of people working on it. While I appreciate the sentiment, It's rather insulting to them to suggest that without me the whole project would suddenly implode. The community, Bohemia, and myself have plenty of time to make plans for the long term development: but whatever happens I want to be back with my family in 2015.
*Bohemia develop's and sells DayZ. I contracted to assist them with this process on a yearly basis. I certainly don't get all, most, or even the large share of sales money. That money goes to the studio which is used to fund development - as it should be. This is used to hire really skilled and awesome people - it's those people who develop the game and I've been working with those talented people to realize the vision.
*I miss home, I want to return to New Zealand to be with my family after being away many years. It is my intention to do that next year, but I'm flexible. I said the same thing internally last year, this year I'm being more deliberate about it so everyone can plan for it.
*I'm very critical of the work I do, I believe that's why I can do work that ends up quite successful. I'm very critical not just of the delivery of work I do but the base concepts behind them. I like to share and discuss those critiques because I think that makes me a better designer through the process.
For those thinking he is simply taking his money and running although he probably made a nice bit of dosh from this like he said the money goes to the studio and Bohemia pays him as he is contracted on a yearly basis.
He has said many times recently that he has to constantly take loads of flights back and forth and these are like 12 hour flights or something like that. He misses his family and that is completely understandable. I hate traveling so I feel his pain.

i travel a lot too, and since the fucking media always tries to twist things around to start arguments and debate over their story of course they would make it sound like he was leaving as hes quitting all his projects.
Good for him, Bohemia is its entire thing so i highly doubt anythings gonna be different with him off by next year or so.
