[release]http://www.businessinsider.com/35-million-people-still-subscribe-to-aols-dialup-service-2011-11 Laugh all you want, but as of the end of September, AOL still had 3.5 million subscribers to its dialup Internet access service — a lot more than the number of people who pay for, say, Spotify. And the decline from last year — about 630,000 subs — was AOL’s smallest Q3 shrinkage yet, thanks to price promotions that attracted 200,000 more people to an AOL access subscription. This time in 2006 and 2007, AOL was losing 5 million customers a year. According to AOL’s earnings release, the “average paid tenure” of its subscribers was about 10.6 years in Q3, up from about 9.4 years last year. (Of course, some of AOL’s existing access subscribers might not even realize they’re still paying for it.) But for those who don’t have access to broadband, don’t want it, or don’t need it, AOL is still better than no Internet access. Over the past decade, monthly AOL bills haven’t changed that much, on average: From about $18 in 2001 to $19.30 in 2006 to about $17.50 now. What has changed is AOL’s overall size — much smaller now. And the bad news is that most of AOL’s profit still comes from its access business, which is still in permanent decline. AOL is still making money? People still use AOL? :pwn:
Or everyone that lives out in the country. I mean living there isn't bad but the fact dial up STILL EXISTS somewhere is freaky. Also, People still use AOL? i thought they went down awhile ago.
I feel bad for those people. The internet must feel like it's getting slower and slower to them and they must not realize that times have changed. You know, it's depressing when my phone has an internet connection orders of magnitude faster than that. And people are still using it...
You know, it's depressing when my phone has an internet connection orders of magnitude faster than that. And people are still using it...
Does your phone use netscape?
My web design client uses AOL Needless to say, she blames me for links being unclickable (She right clicked it)
Middle click new tab open master race.
Wonder why AOL never tried to get into the broadband internet service...
Ugh, AOL? Kill it with fire.
Does your phone use netscape?
HPSDA+ and opera mobile.
Jesus, I have LTE which is 22mbits on my phone and a 100mbit connection at my house, I would fucking kill myself if I went back to dial-up.
I remember back in the day when threads had 56k warnings. good times
I remember back in the day when threads had 56k warnings. good times
Some still do.
I do internet tech support for fuckers who are still on dial-up. I've concluded that there's an incredibly high amount of old people still using dial-up. I have the most difficult job in the world...
We just got rid of it 3 months ago, but we switched to 24mb/1mb service two years ago. My dad was just too lazy to call and cancel it. It was like $14 bucks a month and he didn't really care.

I used to have like 100 kb/s just a few years ago. And i mean like, three years ago. Fuck, I'd fucking kill myself if that happened again.
My connection is 90Kb/s.
People are poor, AOL is what people who cant afford anything faster use, and it has just recently balanced out to the point where internet isn't always getting faster, so people are starting to slow down in what they can afford.
Canadian Tire still on occasion has a kiosk where if you register for AOL you get $100 in canadian Tire money.
I remember when we had dial-up, and obviously it takes up the phone line. No one could ever call us because I or one of my siblings was always on the internet. Eventually we got this thing that would notify you on the computer that someone is calling.
lol dialup. because of where we live we'd had broadband for a fair while. I remembering downloading stuff from steam like 5 or 6 years ago at 1mb/s
Fuck technological advancements. I had AOL - assholes online then it got brought out by talk talk / their customers in the UK :D
AOL has always seemed like a complete joke to me.
Really not all that uncommon, especially out in the boonies. I had dial-up up until a few years ago when Bellsouth was bought out by AT&T, and the boosted the dial-up expenses to be more than their offered DSL. Doesn't matter much; net is still bollocks out here in the mountains because they refuse to ever come out and fix their shit. /poor bastard of an uncle still uses AOL.
AOL is still making money? People still use AOL?
AOL still even exists!?
I had dial up about 5 or 6 years ago I was surprised but I could actually play Guild Wars at a smooth rate most of the time (took like 3 days to install patches though)
What the fuck is dial up, I'm too rich for that shit
My grandpa had dial-up until a few years ago, I'd go back to it if I had to, some of my most nostalgic memories are on dial-up.
