NSW MP Fred Nile, Christian Democratic Party, to push for 21 year legal drinking age
Christian Democratic MP Fred Nile will push for the legal drinking age to be raised to 21 and seek to give greater rights to unborn children if he is re-elected to the upper house, raising questions over how far the Baird government may lean to secure his critical crossbench support.
The octogenarian MP also says he's "ready and raring to go" and would be "lost" if he were no longer in Parliament, despite indicating he will hand over the baton before his eight-year term expires.
Late on Sunday with just over half the Legislative Council votes counted, the Reverend Nile was widely expected to be returned, despite suffering a negative swing of about 0.4 per cent.
This is what happens when you have a system where an MP can be elected with only ~4.5% of the vote after preferences; you get loonies like this who end up holding the balance of power. There are a few people defending him on Facebook, pensioners, but those people are copping a lot of shit for it from everyone else.
Although I will say I agree with him on banning alcohol advertising but instead based on the precedent that tobacco advertising is already banned. Either have both banned or neither.
If they're old enough to vote, drive a car, hold a job or join the military, why shouldn't they be allowed to drink?
Being American sucks sometimes.
Won't happen, 18+ is the standard across the world and I can't see Australia or even NSW raising it because it's super easy to get alcohol regardless of your age
So many bottle-o's near me won't check for your ID, especially drive-thrus managed by small business owners because in there mind if you can drive, then you can drink. Also police enforcement for businesses to check ID's is also low, only the big retailers do it but anything that's small won't.

btw same man who said that during the sydney siege, the real man was the guy with the gun and nobody should get bravery awards if they ran
this guy is a running joke, I highly doubt Baird will listen to him
Um, last time i checked, people drank all the the time in the bible.

Smoking and gun ownership
Uhh, how about no? It's not exactly working out all that well for us and may very well be a large part of why our college age kids are ruining their lives on their 21st birthday with alcohol.
I mean there I believe there is a certain argument to be made on holding off on the consumption of alcohol until the brain is entirely finished developing, but then again I believe that's around 25 so changing it to 21 is just arbitrary.
If you're old enough to grab a gun and go into hell with a good chance of being killed or scarred for life, you should be able to have a goddamn beer.

Hell, fundamentally, I think you should be able to consume whatever want once you're an adult. It's legal to live on big macs and other horrible shit for your body before you're even an adult. And I do believe that food can be as addictive as alcohol.

Funny, that's the argument used in the 60s to lower the drinking age to 18. We were sending 18yo kids to die in Vietnam but they couldn't have a beer
Uh oh, looks like our politicians are leaking. Kill them now Australia, before they breed stupid. Sadly the U.S. is already lost to it...
Nile is a deadset dickhead.
Fred Nile doesn't know what Australians are like when it comes to their grog, no way in hell would this get anywhere.

Nah man, that was grape juice.
Now shut up and drink the historical revisionism.
Oh fuck off as if the lock out laws in Syndey aren't enough. These cunts won't be happy until drinking is illegal.
Fred Nile is only in Parliament for laughs.
Everything he introduces and pushes is hilariously stupid.
people should learn how to tolerate alcohol before they can drive
otherwise they don't know how to handle even watered down booze and kill an entire family because they don't yet understand not to drink and drive

Exactly. Which is why Australians can't get their full licenses until a few years after they can drink, any reading of alcohol before then while driving counts as being over the limit.
looks like he lost the youth vote

He only ever got the pensioner vote. Even then, they are still a micro party.

The US drinking age is tied to statistics about alcohol abuse, ya its kinda dumb that youre old enough to be sent to a warzone in Iraq or afghanistan but can't have a beer
The rest of the world deals with alcohol differently than Americans though, we overconsume, look at what kids do when they reach college they don't have a beer they have 6 and then shots.
Please tell me he wont get in.

Which may or may not be related to America's drinking age legislation, and the things responsible for that.

I think that partly has to do with the drinking age being high. For some, part of the thrill is doing something your not supposed to, and its a "special" thing, because you can't buy liquor on your own. In college, you have under 21's and legal buyers in a mixed enviroment, so underage drinking and partying is inevitable.
Most non-alcoholics tone it down once they hit 21 because whatever, they can just run to the nearest gas station and buy a six pack or head to the bar. Its no different than buying soda.
