The government will not "repeat the mistakes" made when Margaret Thatcher was in power, Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander has promised.
The Lib Dem minister said actions to limit City pay and curb unemployment would differentiate the coalition from the 1980s Conservative government. He added that the question of whether Baroness Thatcher receives a state funeral would be "properly debated".But she had done "many good things", Mr Alexander told Sky News.Mr Alexander, who was a key figure in the Liberal Democrats' decision to form a coalition with the Conservatives in 2010, said: "Margaret Thatcher's legacy is one which looms large over politics today."
He refused to reveal whether his party backed the idea of a state funeral for the longest-serving prime minister of the 20th Century, saying it was "a matter to be considered in due course. I know it is a debate that has been going on."The government is looking at giving company shareholders a veto over what is deemed to be excessive pay for City executives and is promising to do more to tackle rising rates of joblessness, particularly among young people.
This comes after UK unemployment rose by 128,000 in the three months to October to 2.64 million, the highest level since 1994.
Mr Alexander said: "I think the important thing is in these debates we are having about executive pay... about the economic situation for young unemployed people particularly, is that we don't repeat the mistakes that were made in the 1980s when Margaret Thatcher was prime minister."But he conceded: "Many good things were done for this country during this time."
Mr Alexander continued: "I think that as a country we are facing a very challenging situation this year and over the course of the next few years where we are having to constrain the actions of a wealthy elite who seem disconnected from that reality.
"We are trying to make sure that young unemployed people are not blighted by long periods of unemployment as they were in the 1980s."

Considering the lib dems are supposed to be the political opposite of the conservatives I should bloody well hope so.
Doesn't matter though, no one's going to take them seriously as a political party for years now.

They betrayed students, the next generation of voters. We aren't going to forget that.
If they couldn't stick to their own principles, they shouldn't be politicians.
Not that it matters, since it seems that no politician can stick to their principles when offered a nice big salary.
It must be so bad for Margaret Thatcher, Everyone is so mean and anti-her these days.

With good reason.

Yeah but I started to feel bad for her after watching The Iron Lady.

She was a horrible woman, how dare you sympathise with her.
I think after the shit Nick Clegg pulled there is no chance of the Lib Dems being elected any time soon.
I think Thatcher should have a state funeral ... now.
If you ask the Welsh Miners, they'd dig a mine so deep we'd be able to hand her over to Satan personally.
To be honest, I'm totally disillusioned with all of the 3 parties - I won't vote Lib Dems after the tuiton fees, I'll not vote conservative for as long as I live, and I don't really want to vote labour, as they're totally ineffectual. I suppose that labour is the least of the 3 evils, but the least of 3 evils is still evil.
Time to start the Facepunch party, promising strong oposition to all internet censorship laws and to use common sense for once.

I think most of the country is feeling this way at the moment
Problem is the next most popular parties after the big three are UKIP and the BNP. UKIP actually said they want to become Britain's new third party. I think Lib Dems were a pretty good third party before the coalition

I want them to have the funeral in Glasgow, that would just be perfect.

liberalism isn't really the opposite of conservatism btw but i see and understand with your point

I'd give Labour another go if I were a voter in the UK.
We should all just vote for these guys instead.

You should ask a Scot why they dislike Thatcher. I'm sure they'd have a lovely little conversation with you
Although the Tories aren't popular with some, at least they've stuck with most their policies. (Tuition fees, tougher stance on EU etc.)
Lib Dems? Don't get me started. In politics it's better to go through with what you promised even if it's unpopular, rather than just go back on our promises.
at least they've stuck with most their policies. (Tuition fees, tougher stance on EU etc.)
Doesn't change the fact that they're atrocious policies.
I'm not a brit, could someone explain to me why Margaret Thatcher was so bad?
liberalism isn't really the opposite of conservatism btw but i see and understand with your point
Yeah I meant it more in the sense that if you really really didn't like the conservatives then you'd probably vote lib dem and vice versa.
And then they went and joined up hooo boy.
Doesn't change the fact that they're atrocious policies.
Maybe so, but people voted for them. Just putting it into a bit of perspective. Someone must be voting for them.
Margaret Thatcher was the Ronald Reagan of the U.K., wasn't she?
Yeah but I started to feel bad for her after watching The Iron Lady.
She deserves no sympathy.
I'm not a brit, could someone explain to me why Margaret Thatcher was so bad?
She basically ripped out the entire working class, and caused there to be an underclass that couldn't get any work, and their children are so used to being on the dole you can't get them working ethically, all because of some short term problems.
Margaret Thatcher was the Ronald Reagan of the U.K., wasn't she?
Well let me give you idea of what she was like by telling you about the riots of 1981. They were pretty horrid, and they were almost the direct result of Thatcher fucking about with education cuts. Her response to requests for a policy U-turn?
You turn if you want to. The lady's not for turning!

I'm not a brit, could someone explain to me why Margaret Thatcher was so bad?
Unemployment passed 3 million, the highest in Europe. It's only when she introduced the poll tax that shit hit the fan and triggered Britain's most violent riots and eventually led to her fall.
I'm not a brit, could someone explain to me why Margaret Thatcher was so bad?
She oversaw a period of massive embourgeoisement and shift from primarily secondary to tertiary employment, robbing the socialists of their raison d'étre.
