Clarke University has been the home of the Crusaders for the last 40 years, but pretty soon their mascot's name will change from the Clarke Crusaders to the Clarke Pride. Alumni and are students reacting to the news. "I saw some kind of social media uproar, and I get that, you know sometimes change is hard and other people have an issue with it, but I personally don't think change is so bad," said Molly Kleppin, senior student at Clarke. Some say the name is offensive, including the Charity of Sisters Blessed Virgin Mary who founded the university. "The name Crusader refers to really the marriage between religion and violence," said Sister and Clarke faculty member Paulette Skiba. It refers to the history of battles between Christians and Muslims over the Holy Land during the Dark Ages. The Sisters have been working on this for quite some time. However, recent events helped bring along this change. "Culturally we're at a time where there is a lot of religious intolerance and bigotry and you simply can't redefine that word to people on the outside, or people who say, you're the Crusaders?" Sister Paulette said. The change will become effective August 1. Leaders with the BVM Sisters sent us a statement saying, "Today, being more attuned to the power or language and being a community of forward thinkers and learners, this is the right move for a Catholic university rooted in the values of the BVM Sisters – education, charity, justice and freedom - to take.
http://www.kwwl.com/story/34418870/2017/02/Friday/dubuques-clarke-university-to-be-the-crusaders-no-more
A new name has been conceptualized in accordance with newly instated multicultural quotas: "The Jihadists"
Was it really needed? Eh not particularly. It is true that it's associated with religious (well, and political) violence but it's kind of like the vikings where we're so far divorced from the reality of the situation that it's not really overly horrible. On the other end, you'd have to be pretty sensitive to get a hateboner over this change though
Makes sense tbh It's a catholic college, they're probably not proud of the crusades.
I mean "crusaders" doesn't exclusively refer to the medieval religious warriors anymore, it can refer to anyone going on a 'crusade' of any sort. Definitions change. I feel like we should stop deciding certain words are off-limits when they've already been made generic with time. It's not really a big deal and more understandable if it's a Catholic school, but just my two cents.
If I was the dean I'd personally be alright with dropping a mascot calling back to an archaic time of religious warfare. Especially in the current political climate. They probably could have picked a better replacement than "Clarke Pride" though. It's boring.
I mean "crusaders" doesn't exclusively refer to the medieval religious warriors anymore, it can refer to anyone going on a 'crusade' of any sort. Definitions change.
While I agree definitions change, there's a double standard here. Crusade is analogous to Jihad, since both mean the same thing. But you would never see an Islamic school's mascot be 'The Jihadi". A Catholic school being "The Crusaders" is just as dumb.
As long as it was fully their choice to do so, I see no problem. Every university wants to seek the best public relations and if they found the mascot was getting in the way of that, it's in their best interest to change it.
I may be wrong, but every case I've seen like this so far it's a small number of people complaining very loudly (See the Redskins controversy).
That may be. But in either case it's really the best interest of the owners to avoid any negative attention within reason. I think in the case of the Redskins we have an actual ethnic group that sees it as an offensive caricature of their race. After some research it seems native groups have been pursuing this for decades, long before the recent "PC gone mad" craze.

Wow not once did I ever think the dinky little Iowa town I live in would make it on this site.
Wow not once did I ever think the dinky little Iowa town I live in would make it on this site.
And it's for proudly declaring that you've given up on a kingdom of jerusalem. Sad!
Am I not allowed to respond to things said in the thread?
How did you get that from his post?
How did you get that from his post?
He said: "Every university wants to seek the best public relations and if they found the mascot was getting in the way of that, it's in their best interest to change it." So I pointed out that these types of situation don't actually have the effect that one might think based on the outcry of the generally small number of malcontents.
If my school mascot was a crusader i'd just come in full plate armor.
Tudd how did you find this nobody gives a shit about Iowa

That's why I quoted it. I won't be responding to any more off topic direct attacks at me.

They may be afraid of a swastika scenario where these things start being widely interpreted as hate symbols, and it's kind of difficult to not invoke that kind of imagery when you're a catholic school.
They should change their name to the Hospitallers or the Templars.
I may be wrong, but every case I've seen like this so far it's a small number of people complaining very loudly (See the Redskins controversy).
I bet you'd be up in arms if an Islamic school chose "Jihadis" as their mascot.
What should the bullseye be though?
The 37th Infantry Division? [t]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/93/37th_Infantry_Division_SSI.svg/150px-37th_Infantry_Division_SSI.svg.png[/t]
