For the last few months my friends have been raving about the Digital Economy Bill and how it means they can't get music anymore. I've never been much of a pirate as I'm far too paranoid, but nether the less I looked it up and I don't see what's changed. Basically from what I worked out it means they can turn off your internet if they catch you, but didn't they just fine you before anyway? I don't understand what's changed since it was put in place. Pirating music has always been against the law hasn't it and you've always been in danger of being caught...
Do you live in the UK or something? Because I've never heard of it here in the U.S.
I believe it is UK only.
Nothing's changed for me, wierdly, and I'm nearly constantly downloading my lovely linux distros.
imo nothing has really changed, they just have slightly more legislation now. people still upload and download just as much as before, a good example was when ipred was enacted in sweden it didnt reduce swedish piracy it just made vpn companys rich
Linux is open source...
From what I understand the copyright holder is the one that orders the ISP to shut off your internet, but this has always been the case, just with fines instead of shutting off your internet.
Thanks waylander, kinda makes sense.

Like I said, I'm far too paranoid for pirating shit, if you want to do it then go ahead. It would of been much easier for you just to say what waylander said.
I was wondering the same thing. I still download shit loads, heh.
Though for some reason my shitty line is limited to a 2mbit connection, so I don't think I could download what is medically known as 'shitloads', even if I downloaded at my max speed all day every day.
I found this video to be both funny and relevant.

Mandleson. Fuck off.

You can't really bring the "I didn't know" to the argument :|

Its not that they can disconnect you(there's always been a risk for downloading warez and you accept to take that risk if you download it) its the fact that to do it they are now legally able to watch what and where you are on the internet, which is invasion of privacy
They still kinda can't see exactly what you're doing. Obfuscation is a nice method of privacy-maintaining.
I could go to the local library and utilize the free wireless to find the the file I need, then what you going to try?? Disconnect their ISP? You might as well just burn the books on rights to speech.
*Dear mandy*

So you watched the wimp video and reworded it? Nice.

Sorry to dissapoint you, but Dan Bull isn't the only person who realised you can download from public places...
Aren't most torrent programs encrypted?
Aren't most torrent programs encrypted?
You can encrypt the communications but bittorrent relies on predictable connection methods and if you connect to someone who is collecting IPs then you are already caught and it is too late to do anything about it. Encryption won't solve that problem.
