• Russia Makes Claim for 1.2 Million Square Km of Arctic
Aug 4 Russia said on Tuesday it has resubmitted a claim to the United Nations for some 1.2 million square km of the Arctic shelf, a drive to secure more of the mineral-rich region where other countries have rival territorial interests. The Russian economy is overwhelmingly reliant on natural resources and the Arctic's estimated huge oil and gas reserves are expected to become more accessible as climate change melts and ice and technology advances. This prospect has attracted other nations, including Norway, the United States, Canada and Denmark while international energy companies are planning large drilling campaigns. "The Russian bid covers underwater area of some 1.2 million square km extending for more than 350 nautical miles from the coast," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. "A vast array of scientific data collected during many years of Arctic research serves to justify Russia's rights to this area." The Arctic rush carries considerable climate risks, campaigners say. Greenpeace, which is calling for a protected sanctuary in the uninhabited area around the North Pole, said on Tuesday Russia's move was "ominous".
SOURCE: http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/08/04/russia-arctic-idUSL5N10F3H920150804 Now Russia isn't the only country that is trying to do this but is the most recent one to put in a claim. I think we can all agree that the Arctic should not be used for drilling with all the dangers that come with the process. If anything goes wrong it will be extremely difficult to respond to it up there.
Can I claim 1.2 million Square KM of Russia? Russia is p. big and empty.
We all know they'll try to claim it regardless. They once put a Russian flag on the sea floor under the arctic, in the area that Canada owns.
That was the funniest shit, they just took a sub and snuck a flag over to our side, like what were they thinking?
That was the funniest shit, they just took a sub and snuck a flag over to our side, like what were they thinking?
Perhaps they think that we were trying to "claim" the moon by sticking a flag on it and figured the same principle worked back here on earth?
Oil drilling in those climates would be disasterous. I'm with greenpeace on this one. The arctic should definetely be protected from all kinds of exploitation.
our friendly neighbourhood megacorp Shell is rushing there too
Hopefully the protests will intensify. I just keep thinking about the maintenance all the machinery would need in order to survive those climates. Pipes could easily freeze and crack and then how are you going to get rescue/cleanup ships out their when they'd have to break through ice potentially. I hope this never happens.

Russia will probably just claim the land and no-one will do anything about it, as per usual :v:
gotta protect those minorities
Putin, find a use for all the barren land you already have. Maybe sell the Shakalin Oblast to Japan.
Putin, find a use for all the barren land you already have.
they already have a use, it's called attrition.
How about we build some roads in Russia at first, fix the economy... Putin wants more land, while the current one isn't even used. Some villages in Russia don't even have the electricity...
Russia should probably focus on fixing the problems on its home territory before even thinking about reaching out elsewhere. I kind of support the idea of countries claiming territory in the Arctic if it's going to be used strictly for non-profit purposes, but God knows that's not going to happen ever.
Climate change opening the lands for exploitation to harvest its resources to make climate change even faster to open more resources It would be hilarious and scary if this is Russia's plan to colonize the arctic when it becomes a stable temperate climate due to the world reaching Cretaceous temperatures Not to put on my tinfoil hat here, but I'm puttin on my tinfoil hat here.
Russia will probably just claim the land and no-one will do anything about it, as per usual :v:
It already worked when they decided to invade a sovereign nation, why not an uninhabited stretch of the arctic? Antarctica has land mass, the arctic is literally just ice.
If World War III was fought entirely in the Arctic it'd be pretty badass.

For the vast majority of its existence, Russia found it easier and cheaper to invade/annex/colonize a place rather than develop it. The only way Russia is really gonna stop expanding in the long term is if you make it hard for the country to expand and either decentralize or breakup a country which is simply far too big to administer. Of course, this won't happen anytime soon.
It's like watching a game of Crusader Kings II unfold. Minus the marrying of children and incest.
God I wonder wonder who has made these massive estimations, both the Chinese south China Sea, and the article there's always some reserve larger than any previously ever discovered even though nobody has ever actually drilled it
The Russian economy is overwhelmingly reliant on natural resources and the Arctic's estimated huge oil and gas reserves are expected to become more accessible as climate change melts and ice.
"We're using too much oil, we're running out and the ice caps are melting! What do we do?" "There is oil beneath the ice caps, when they are gone we will have all the oil we need." Humans are truly nature's bastards :v:
If World War III was fought entirely in the Arctic it'd be pretty badass.
then it would be the Arctic War though
then it would be the Arctic War though
Sounds more badass.
