Trump plans to name the former Texas governor Rick Perry as his secretary of energy. The selection of Mr. Perry to lead the energy agency would offer a rich irony: During a televised debate in 2011, when he was seeking the Republican nomination, Mr. Perry intended to list the Department of Energy among agencies he wanted to eliminate, but he could not remember its name. While Texas is rich in energy resources and Mr. Perry is an enthusiastic advocate of extracting them, it is not clear how that experience would translate into leading what is also a major national security agency. Despite its name, the Department of Energy plays the leading role in designing nuclear weapons and in ensuring the safety and reliability of the nation’s aging nuclear arsenal through a constellation of scientific laboratories. About 60 percent of the Energy Department’s budget is devoted to managing the National Nuclear Security Administration, which defines its mission as enhancing national security through the military application of nuclear science. The administration manages the country’s nuclear weapons stockpile and runs American programs on nuclear nonproliferation and counterterrorism. The two men who served as President Obama’s energy secretaries were physicists, one with a Nobel Prize, the other a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mr. Perry, 66, was governor from 2000 to 2015 and before that was the Texas agriculture commissioner. He holds a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Texas A&M University. He was briefly a front-runner in the 2012 presidential campaign, but his Energy Department “oops moment,” as he called it, was widely seen as a major factor in sinking his candidacy.
a dumb country hick leading a bunch of physcists and nuclear scientists. they must be tearing their hair out at the prospect

Remember Trump's comical claims about how he was going to get people that were somehow the best at what they do and yet we'd never heard of them? Like he had the seal team 6 of politicians hiding out in a secret bunker waiting to take office or something? What a joke
Oh god no
a dumb country hick leading a bunch of physcists and nuclear scientists. they must be tearing their hair out at the prospect
How would this even work? I keep seeing news about how Trump is doing dumb shit like appointing climate change deniers to lead the EPA and dumb hicks to lead scientists. And I just can't imagine these people kowtowing about trying to carry out whatever ridiculous instructions these insanely bad choices come up with. How are they going to lead these departments without every member of said departments constantly telling them to shut up and fuck off until they know what they are talking about?
running out of swamp jokes to make here

It's likely to get you a one way ticket to the unemployment line.
This is what America actually unironically voted for. People on this very site went outside, went to the polls, and said, "Yes, I want this for my country."
I hate this fucking year

To be fair, he was recovering from back surgery and was on some heavy drugs, and admits he probably shouldn't have been running that year.
He will be replacing Ernest Moniz, a nuclear physicist: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Moniz

Like I understand if you are the President you usually appoint people who know what they are talking about to positions, which Trump seems to be completely ignoring, but the fact that you CAN appoint someone who knows fuck all about the specific topic they may be entirely in control of is mindbogglingly stupid. Like you wouldn't hire someone with zero experience to oversee a fucking car factory, you'd hire someone who understands the sector in hand, not someone who
holds a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Texas A&M University.
:speechless:
He was pretty open to clean energy while he was governor.
Rick Perry please stop embarrassing us Love, Texas. Just stay on dancing with the stars
He was pretty open to clean energy while he was governor.
That actually is true, Texas has been surprisingly good with clean energy.
why in the name of fuck does the department of energy deal with fucking nukes

Honestly speaking, I've been having a hard time believing everything that's happened in the American political system. I'm Canadian so it just seems like you guys are going to go through another Stephen Harper... Which I wouldn't wish on anyone.

Donald is just skipping straight to the goof part.
Good job voting this guy in, America.
thanks. how's justin "fidel did nothing wrong" "hire based on gender" trudeau doing?
So the guy who prayed for rain in Texas is going to have control over our nuclear weapons program, and just so happened to be the governor of a state that just stumbled on a whole bunch of shale. Perry also happens to serves on the board of ETP, the people responsible for the Dakota pipeline. Trump also appointed the CEO of Exxon to Secretary of State. So I guess he drained the Swamp, dredged the oil at the bottom, and made that his cabinet?
thanks. how's justin "fidel did nothing wrong" "hire based on gender" trudeau doing?
Trudeau's failed to deliver on a lot of his promises, but he's so far been an extremely charismatic PM and an excellent diplomat - he's well spoken and doesn't, say, attack people on Twitter. I disapprove of his liberalism, but by God he's better than Trump by a long shot just for his character.
This all feels like an elaborate scheme to make the United States closer to being a corporate oligarchy.
This all feels like an elaborate scheme to make the United States closer to being a corporate oligarchy.
Doesn't seem to elaborate tbh

But he's draining the swaaaaaaaaaamp! Muh cucks muh jobs muh mooslims I guess America deserves to fall apart. The entire deep south, Appalachians and rust belt are full of completely nonredeemable pieces of shit and when they realize that tall boy beer cans melt on the surface of Venus it'll be too late.
