I live in North Carolina, and I used to live in Michigan. We gained a small amount of snow on Monday, about 4". This made school close. Its kind of crazy because in Michigan it takes around 2 to 3 feet of snow to cancel school. Well, it snowed more during the afternoon, and lingered overnight. So that makes Tuesday - No School. It was freezing rain last night, so now it is Wednesday, no school. And I am almost certain that school will be out tomorrow. Why are North Carolinians such snow-pussies? One congressman recommended having school Monday (MLK day) to make up for one of the snow days. They brutally shut him down, saying things like "the board is appalled at *congressman's* idea to take up that holiday to make up a school day..." when it wouldn't be that bad of an idea. I mean, they are concerned about honoring MLK, how is sitting around playing video games honoring him? He did a great thing, no doubt, but this winter here is going to have plenty of snow in it, a lot more than usual. Do you guys live in a place where if you get like an inch of snow everything is canceled? *EDIT! SCHOOL IS CLOSED TOMORROW AS WELL. THERES BARELY ANY SNOW LEFT YOU IDIOTS. CALM YOURSELVES NORTH CAROLINIANS.* *oh and it's not like I am not liking the snow days here, but whenever you see a true North Carolinian they are scared as hell of 4" of snow? like what the hell?*
We swedes DEAL WITH IT ... with extremely late buses and trains (in the southern part of Sweden at least)
Snow is pretty rare in the southern states, which is why they closed.
Is this a complaint? If so, shame on you.
In Washington they will cancel school just for one inch
Southern New York is happy with a foot of snow. This pleases us.
Hahah. Living in Canada, I have never had a 'snow day' at school in my entire life. I remember my teacher telling me one day that it must be at least -50 degrees outside without the wind chill for schools to close down.
I know what you mean, I moved from New York to Atlanta, GA. But the reason for shutting down everything doesn't stem purely from not being used to it, but southern states don't have plowing/sanding equipment. Also, southern states regularly flirt with freezing over winter, so the potential for snow melting and refreezing into ice is much higher.
Is this a complaint? If so, shame on you.
So your the type of person who would rather sit at home on facepunch all day instead of going to school and learning new material? If so, shame on you.
You're lucky to get holidays, in Finland we don't get any snow days no matter how much snow.
School just got canceled today for snow
It takes 2 feet here for Wyoming to even think of that. In other words MEANWHILE IN WYOMING
I live in Michigan, and we got the same amount of snow. Still in school. My school district hardly gives out snowdays... Also, I go to school on MLK day, even though every other school near me doesn't.
i just started school last week
I live in Georgia USA and everything has been shut down since Monday as well. The reason is that nobody around here knows how to drive in snow - something as simple as 4 inches of snow turns every road into a death trap. People just zing along going way the fuck too fast or crawl at 1 mph.
In canada it's more like : By the way, i'm canadian, and it really is like that.
Been out yesterday and today, and hopefully tomorrow. Also I go on MLK day as well.
We swedes DEAL WITH IT ... with extremely late buses and trains (in the southern part of Sweden at least)
Us Brits deal with it by shutting down :smug:
This is hilarious, just got 18 inches last night
The school county I live in in Maryland gets snow every freaking winter upwards of a few inches and they close school just for the thought of snow that's supposed to happen in a week.
2 hour delays are where it's at. You get to sleep in, and school's pretty disrupted, but you don't have those extra days in the summer to make up.
Same happened to Ireland a few weeks ago, it turns out that Ireland has only one government-owned snow plow, it's more embarrassing than having none.
It's actually more of an ice thing than snow. I don't know why but here, they have cleared barely any ice. There's a giant set of stairs on campus and all the steps are iced so you are forced to hold onto the rail for dear life. Most of the sidewalks are covered in ice too and only on the last day did they start scraping it off, after most of the stuff melted.
We didn't get any snow days here in Wayne county (Detroit) but my Ma didn't want to go through all the snow in the morning then pick me up in the late evening. So I slept really good.
Schools NEVER close in Denmark, i wish they would... So i could sleep longer...
Well... my school did in december last year.
Yeah, Michigan almost never has snow days, it sucks, my car isn't meant for snow, and I almost got taken out by a big ass cable truck yesterday :saddowns:
