The setting of Portlandia's Women and Women First bookstore is now protesting the show's transmisogyny.
- - -
In Other Words bookstore on Northeast Killingsworth Street has been a women's community center and home to feminist literature since its founding in 1993.
But to many across the country and even here in Portland, it's best known as the bookstore Women and Women First from IFC's Portlandia. For six seasons of the show, In Other Words has allowed Portlandia to film the saga of feminist bookstore owners Toni and Candace, played by Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen.

Well, that relationship has apparently soured.
In Other Words bookstore currently has a sign on its door reading, "Fuck Portlandia! Transmisogyny – Racism – Gentrification – Queer Antagonism – Devaluation of Feminist Discourse."
It's like jokes wrote themselves some days...
How can a show gentrify?
Turns out Portlandia is a documentary, not a comedy sketch show.
I mean, not exactly well known for being able to take a joke.

The stereotype exists for a reason. This is just more proof of that. :v:

Nobody enjoys this show more than pacific nortth-westerners

Anyone who's been to Portland already knew this
a feminist... bookstore
now ive seen everything
nowadays there's feminist varients of practically everything under the sun if you're up to looking for it
I live right across the I5 bridge from Portland, over here in Vancouver... The only time I've ever seen this show, was when I was flipping through channels...
It wasn't funny... I could hardly watch it.
Believe it or not, there is a huge difference from one side of the bridge to the other.

Wonder if they'd turn you down if you applied and were a guy

Show me a feminist strip club!
I love this. My favorite part is where they wanted to know what specific content caused the complaint and an interview and got this:
"After some consideration and research we've decided to officially tell the Willamette Weekly to go fuck themselves. Your paper has absolutely zero journalistic professionalism and you are scummy rape apologists. Thanks for the opportunity tho! Have a great night."
Tumblr leaks into real life.

Well feminist/lgbt bookstores exist because books with radically progressive messages often struggle to get sold in regular bookstores. Whilst these guys may seem quite ridiculous, there was a time where ideals like "equal pay", "gay rights" and "women should be able to leave a husband who beats them" were in the category of ridiculously progressive, and their own bookstore was necessary to push forward on those issues.

It's like they just string a load of random words together, I bet they don't even know what any of that means they just thought it sounded smart.

It is difficult humor to appreciate. I've only enjoyed a select few of their skits.

Many of them probably exist under the banner of sexual empowerment.

Ye, same here. My girlfriend really enjoys this show, and I'll sit and watch with her very now and then. It's got some good moments, but a lot of the jokes flat imo

I feel like it's somewhat like Tim and Eric in that regard. It's got a very specific style, and if you click with it you'll really like it, but if you don't you won't really get it. I personally find it pretty hilarious, but I can understand not busting a gut laughing at it. It's kind of a slow burn show.
A lot of the jokes make sense if you've ever lived in the west coast it's just that the show screams "pretentious coffee shop" to me. To be fair it is a show about Portland, so there.

They're called burlesque clubs.

As someone on the other side of the I5, the people of Portland aren't all weird. It's only the people in se/ne

Burlesques are actually a lot of fun, and they have a totally different vibe from strip clubs. Burlesque shows use nudity as part of putting on a fun, funny, and impressive show, whereas at a strip club nudity is the show. There are erotic strip teases and such, yeah, but there are also comedy routines, talent shows (like contortion, acrobatics, ballet), and a bunch of other things. The atmosphere is very light, very tongue-in-cheek, and the performers are all legitimately having a great time.

That's why I like them! And that's why I think a lot of feminists (especially the sex positive ones) don't have as much of a problem with them. It's not a predatory set-up, but a place to celebrate the human body and dancing and singing and everything. I've been to two burlesque shows and loved both of them (also got really drunk at the time, but I'm sure that's unrelated).
Gentrification
Hold up, i thought Gentrification was a good thing? What the fuck? How is Gentrification bad?
The term is often used negatively, suggesting the displacement of poor communities by rich outsiders.
..Apparently.
Hold up, i thought Gentrification was a good thing? What the fuck? How is Gentrification bad?
Mixed bag, that. On the one hand, it's good to see economically depressed areas have new life breathed into them. Local businesses flourish, property values rise, etc. On the other, those conditions also essentially force out the previous residents, who are generally very low income families, because they can no longer afford to live there.
In the US, gentrification is also often a racial issue. Well situated, but economically destitute, urban neighborhoods with a predominantly black racial makeup become economic hotspots for outside investors. White families move in to enjoy the benefits, while the black residents are pushed elsewhere for lack of ability to afford the new conditions.
Hold up, i thought Gentrification was a good thing? What the fuck? How is Gentrification bad?
its weirdly both good and bad
Hold up, i thought Gentrification was a good thing? What the fuck? How is Gentrification bad?
For people with money gentrification is great: less crime, less weird shit, less hassle being outside your house. For people without money, gentrification is utter bullshit and pretty soon you can't afford fuck, including your rent.
I'm betting they're very self-aware and revel in extra attention
How does a feminist bookstore stay afloat. In fact, how does any bookstore that's not Barnes and Noble stay afloat?
how does any bookstore that's not Barnes and Noble stay afloat?
Probably by catering to a very specific market. Feminists, for example.
