• Obama welcomes China's rise
"The rise of a strong, prosperous China can be a source of strength for the community of nations," Mr Obama said in a speech in Japan's capital, Tokyo. Better US ties with Beijing do not mean a weakening of relations with US allies in the region, he said. Describing himself as the first "Pacific" US president, he said the US was committed to the area's security. Mr Obama is now in Singapore, where he is to attend an Asia-Pacific economic summit. His trade representative Ron Kirk, who is already at the Apec meeting, says the US wants barriers to trade and investment removed to promote an open global trade system. Mr Obama will round off his week-long Asian tour with stops in China and South Korea. On the issue of economic co-operation, Mr Obama challenged Asian countries to break their dependence on exports to the US and to pursue "balanced" and sustainable economic growth. "We must strengthen our economic recovery, and pursue growth that is both balanced and sustained," he said. "We simply cannot return to the same cycles of boom and bust that led us into a global recession." He said the US would pursue a new economic strategy that would mean "saving more and spending less". He urged Asian leaders to break their dependence on exports to the US market and to open up their markets to speed up a global economic recovery.
Honestly, I don't know what to say.... Isn't spending less money the exact opposite of what many people accuse him of doing?
Honestly, I don't know what to say.... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8360427.stm
I don't see the real problem with this. The U.S is pretty dependable on China, and I'd rather have him try and strengthening the bond and negotiating peacefully with the Chinese, than have him instigate a war.
"Quick. Let's make allies with China before they take over!"
This. China is THE global superpower now, we best start making friends.
its cuz hes a commie
its cuz hes a commie
so true. china wont invade the US because blacky is a commie. anyway, USA is pretty dependable on china, most of the things I see are made in china.
This. China is THE global superpower now, we best start making friends.
Not yet, but give it a decade or two.
This. China is THE global superpower now, we best start making friends.
China is the super power but the US has long been deemed the hyperpower... Regardless, they are strengthening fast and it is best to be friends rather than enemies. Right now we're kinda frenemies.
This. China is THE global superpower now, we best start making friends.
We still have more nukes.
We still have more nukes.
They have more people. The whole point of having so many was that should china be nuked, there was no way in hell anyone'd be able to kill off the majority of their population.
They have more people. The whole point of having so many was that should china be nuked, there was no way in hell anyone'd be able to kill off the majority of their population.
I meant more nukes as sorta giving the US more importance. For example back in the beginning of the 20th century the more battleships you had the more powerful people thought you where. Now its nukes.
China is the super power but the US has long been deemed the hyperpower... Regardless, they are strengthening fast and it is best to be friends rather than enemies.
They have more people. The whole point of having so many was that should china be nuked, there was no way in hell anyone'd be able to kill off the majority of their population.
that is overwhelmingly retarded not only would a nuclear attack on china destroy the infrastructure necessary to take care of all the people there, it would demoralize and traumatize them.
that is overwhelmingly retarded not only would a nuclear attack on china destroy the infrastructure necessary to take care of all the people there, it would demoralize and traumatize them.
Three Gorges Dam. If that thing goes, it takes a good portion of the population with it.
We still have more nukes.
These are nukes you're talking about. It doesn't matter how many you have as much as where you use them.
They have more people. The whole point of having so many was that should china be nuked, there was no way in hell anyone'd be able to kill off the majority of their population.
If that idiotic idea was true then why would they have a one-child policy?
Isn't spending less money the exact opposite of what many people accuse him of doing?
Yeah, but anybody can talk about it. His words don't reflect his actions.
I for one welcome our new chinese overlords.
god damn i fucking hate obama. :black101:
If that idiotic idea was true then why would they have a one-child policy?
They have a one-child policy because their population is so immensely large. Is that guy saying we had tons of nukes because of that or that China grew its population to save itself from nukes?
You people need to look into Mao more- obviously today they aren't going to mass reproduce simply to survive a nuke- and obviously today they probably wouldn't try to, but back in the days of Mao the whole point of having so many Chinese was exactly the reasons why I stated. Should the USSR and US go nuclear, and China get hit, China was expected by the Party to have a strong military and large population left, while the other powers dwindled in population and defense. Obviously that isn't the goal anymore, they're trying to limit the population, but regardless, Mao's plan of creating tons and tons of Chinese worked well, and surely if they were to be nuked China would still have a fairly large population left int he immediate aftermanth. I'm not saying it would work how Mao planned, or at all, but take that up with him, not me.
I meant more nukes as sorta giving the US more importance. For example back in the beginning of the 20th century the more battleships you had the more powerful people thought you where. Now its nukes.
Right, I understand- nukes are deterrents more than weapons, but when it comes down to it, your nukes are only worth as much as the damage they can do. The Russians could have 10 crude ICBMs to ever 1 of our tactical ICBMs, but it doesn't mean that the Russians overpower us int hat respect. Actually, they do have more nukes than us, but because most of them are either outdated, faulty, or otherwise not nearly as precise as ours, we don't see them as a threat that way.
We're only on Super-powers. We haven't invented Hyper-powers yet. Don't even get me started on Giga-powers.
It's not a technical term, it's a 'de facto' term. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperpower
A hyperpower is a state that is militarily, economically and technologically dominant on the world stage. In a modern context, it is used to describe the United States.
[editline]05:37PM[/editline]
They have a one-child policy because their population is so immensely large. Is that guy saying we had tons of nukes because of that or that China grew its population to save itself from nukes?
Mao wanted to increase the population so they would have at least a moderate size population should China get nuked.
so true. china wont invade the US because blacky is a commie. anyway, USA is pretty dependable on china, most of the things I see are made in china.
Most things you don't see are made in China too.
source
Source is probably his own flawed logic and reasoning. Obama probably wants more money from China so he sweet talks them.
Isn't spending less money the exact opposite of what many people accuse him of doing?
"Hey, we NEED those turtles man."
It's kinda funny. No Asian country in the history of the world has every been the world leader, not counting Genghis Khan. But after 2012, China will probably be world leader in place of the U.S.
you act like this is a bad thing, OP oh wait, republicans seem to think china is this belligerent soviet-union-like superpower that is just itching to invade the US (they're not) but I guess it's just a kneejerk reaction to the US losing power to china as a result of our own rampant nationwide stupidity [editline]01:48PM[/editline] how dare obama support, oppose, or do anything fuckin commie muslim atheist jew
Hey if China isn't doing anything to piss us off, why not make friends?
Mao wanted to increase the population so they would have at least a moderate size population should China get nuked.
Mao did see Chinese citizens as extremely expendable
It's probably not smart to make enemies with strong nations.
