Former prime minister John Howard thinks Julian Assange is an attention seeker of the worst kind.
But he's not sure if the WikiLeaks founder has committed a crime.
Assange has been granted political asylum by Ecuador, but won't leave that country's embassy in London for fear of being arrested and extradited to Sweden over sexual assault
allegations.
The former hacker is worried he'll then be handed over to the US to face charges over WikiLeaks' release of classified documents.
Mr Howard says while Assange is no hero, it's not clear whether he's guilty of a crime.
"He's just an attention seeker of the worst kind," Mr Howard told a diplomatic forum in Canberra on Thursday.

"But I'm still struggling to see what crime he's committed."

"That made it, at the end of the day in Wikileaks' case, more of an ego trip rather than a serious minded contribution to international public policy,"
This information had a profound impact on international policy. Just not in the favor of the US and other western powers.

I cannot think of a single thing that wikileaks changed about international policy except a new policy of persecuting assange
it just let people know more about what kind of dirty shit was going on but I think most people in the world know the government and most organisations do dirty shit behind our backs, it was just to know specifics

Not really, the leaking of "confidential" information by wikileaks was more of a headline than any of the information actually leaked

It pretty much leaked a lot of corruption and caused a lot of dissent and about half of the middle east went down because of it.
Assange helped reveal lot of shit USA has done and tried to pull.
Like pressuring Finland to increase it's anti-terrorism efforts, which finnish government responded to by telling USA to fuck off and mind their own business.

You can't really attribute the fall of Middle Eastern governments to Wikileaks, it might have acted to support the falls, but it didn't cause them.
John Howard is a brain dead person, I would probably ignore everything he says, he's not even in power.

From the last few prime minsters we had(and currently) he was the best honestly. He actually supported nuclear power until everyone suddenly got afraid of mutations and sudden mushroom clouds out of no where.

Let's ignore everything you say then, you have no "power"

and that's not a change in international policy, it's just revealing what happened after the fact.
Is it a secret to anyone that Assange is an egotastical fuck? He did a good thing on helping the release of all those cables and classified documents but then he turned it into a massive jerkfest all about himself.

The leaks also revealed messages sent to USA's embassay here and urging the staff find a way to make the finnish government to join NATO, which caused quite a shitstorm in our government. Some of the messages also listed finnish politicians that opposed joining NATO and rated which of them were the most "dangerous" in that aspect.
Caused quite a shitstorm in finnish government.
I wonder what it's like to give up your everyday life and hide in an embassy for years
Yeah me too, I realy don't care if he's seeking for attention, he did a hell of a job no matter what.
