[quote]If these mummies weren't already dead, they'd be dressed to kill.
That's because they've been dug up as part of a bizarre local ritual in a village in Indonesia that involves giving decomposed corpses a new look.
Family members of the deceased exhuming their ancestors' bodies and change their clothes as a way of remembering them. They then walk the dead around the village, almost like zombies.
The ritual, called Ma'nene, happens every three years to honour the villagers' love for the deceased. It is carried out in the Toraja district of Indonesia's South Sulawesi Province.
Locals believe dead family members are still with them, even if they died hundreds of years ago, a family spokesman said.

Ew.
drop dead fashion divas
That's nice.
Gotta look fresh in the afterlife
i want new bow ties every 3 years
What is the point of this? Like, really?
Imagine having the job of undressing them and then putting on the new clothes. Can't say it would be my cup of tea.
Can't decide if that's creepy or kinda sweet. Maybe a bit of both? Can't be hygienic though...
i can just imagine the stiffness and awkwardness of moving the body around, and the sound of the skin stretching after pretty much becoming leather.

The world would be a better place if more places celebrated death.

200 years old and still looking sharp
That's kind of sweet/cute in a creepy way.
I didn't think a corpse would look that good after at least 3 years.
I bet some tourists are freaking the fuck out.

Mummies are different from your average buried dead in coffins.
Mummification involves using various methods to remove as much moisture from the body as possible, and various chemicals are usually added to kill bacteria, fungus and other such things that would cause the mummy to decompose. Mummification of a person will stop the decomposition of the body if the mummy is stored in such a way that oxygen can't contact it (like mummies stored in museums have sealed glass cases that are evacuated and pumped full of nitrogen.)
Mummies stored like these people have them will eventually result in the mummy decomposing and turning into bones.
Natural mummification is also a well known phenomenon. Over the centuries, people have died (or been killed) and ended up at the bottom of a bog, where there is no oxygen and have been preserved for sometimes 2000+ years. The same goes with animals.

Would their skin still be plushy after that long? Seeing preserved bodies in glass cases makes me think they only look alive, but their skin is like Hot Pocket crust.
I'd say that with proper care, it could be tensile enough that it wouldn't crumble, maybe more like cardboard than hot pocket crust. Remember, we're not dealing with mummies that are thousands of years old, but more like decades and maybe a century old in this case, and it looks like these Indonesians have managed to figure out a way to overcome the extreme humidity. Normally, it'd be very hard to do in a place like Indonesia because of that, and bodies would probably decompose fairly quickly otherwise.
I don't think I'd mind if they did that to me. you ain't ever gonna forget Grandpa Joe if you go partying with him every three years.
