Barack Obama’s former White House counsel, human rights groups and families have made a final push to pressure the US and Canada over three men who have been detained in the United Arab Emirates for nearly two years.
The three men, two American Libyans and one Canadian Libyan, face a verdict on Monday in their trial before the UAE’s highest court. In March, prosecutors suddenly dropped charges that the men supported terrorist groups, but charges remain that they provided supplies to groups in a foreign country and collected donations without permission.
Before that, the men were held in prisons for 505 days without charges, and family members have alleged torture including beatings, electric shocks and sleep deprivation. All three dual citizens are businessmen who had for decades traveled to and worked in the UAE without incident.
“It’s been nowhere close to a fair trial,” said Amal Eldarat, 27, whose father Kamal and brother Mohammed are Americans who have been detained since August 2014. “You cannot just have a new charge sheet put in without any evidence and not reset a trial. They’re using the old case file for the new charges.”
After the troubles of being detained illegally, tortured, and being tried for crimes of which they are most likely innocent, it's a sham that even more false charges are being thrown on top.
I'm not sure you can call this illegal, most of those things are pretty standard in that part of the world, something isn't illegal if the government there doesn't want it to be.

Are you serious?

Yes, he is. I lived in both Saudi Arabia and the UAE for a total of thirteen years of my life. The UAE's a better place to live than Saudi Arabia, but only marginally. It's like comparing dirt to a turd. The law there is enforced or deferred depending on how rich and well connected you are, and there's basically no penalty for their abuse of power.

That doesn't mean it isn't wrong, but it's not illegal detainment unless it actually violates their own laws.
Let's call it what it is then: unethical, immoral, human rights-violating detainment.

'Illegal' means it does not confine to the laws. If the laws in the UAE doesn't prevent 505-day imprisonment on no charge and prisoner abuse together with reusing dropped case files, then this is perfectly legal. Fucked up, awful and inhumane, but very, very legal.

Violating human rights is illegal so all this mumbo jumbo is redundant.
Interesting.
Won't say much more than that.

I'll back this up; I spent my whole childhood in the UAE and then some. It's kind of a shithole.
Yeah, it's got dozens of fancy buildings and venues. And a hundred more construction sites that'll never be finished. It's trying so hard to be a modern-day super city but it just doesn't get there.
I've been to five-star hotels that are right across from borderline slums.

i'm curious as to why?

Sadly, it isn't unless those human rights are backed up by law. "Human rights" are just norms and moral principles, sometimes accepted into conventions by the U.N., but even then their authority to actually do much of anything about it is very limited.
Apparently some US people think they have all the legal rights in UAE that they have in the US. Surprise! You're at the whim of their courts!

Human rights are about as arbitrary as the law of God.
And human rights are violated like all the time, even in EU. Like uh, Breivik has been complaining about 'em.

Only if a country has agreed to various international treaties. Even then, countries violate those all the time.

I know my rights! I have read the amendments!!!

How trustworthy is a man who killed 20+ teenagers however? Not very, I'd say.

What? What does his trustworthiness have to do with anything, or his kill-count?
What the fuck are you even saying or suggesting?
[editline]asd[/editline]
Oh right, you think he's lying about the mistreatment.

I don't care how trustworthy he is, I only care how trustworthy the Norwegian court system is, considering they were the ones who passed the final judgement on whether he was mistreated or not.
