How the fuck do you not double check something before handing it off, especially in a case like this?
The kid caught in the crash lost a leg because he was missing some bones after they "flew out of his body", jesus god.
A Jury sentenced someone? Isn't it Judges that do the sentencing?
haha, whoops!

Must be an American thing. I recently did jury service on a criminal case and we basically just had to say whether we thought the defendant was guilty or not guilty of the charges that were put forward. Seems really dangerous to trust jurors with any kind of sentencing decisions as this case shows.

This is how it's always worked here.
It's not dangerous. Things like this rarely happen, that's why its making news....

Fair enough. I do still think it's a little weird for jurors to be involved in sentencing though considering most people aren't terribly familiar with the law.
When I was on jury we had to pick a foreman, or woman, and that person had the job of filling out the paperwork. No one wanted to be the foreman. I don't recall anyone, including me, asking to double check the paperwork either.
That's unfortunate, but it will no doubt be amended in the appeal.
Juries don't sentence people in the States, judges do.
Jurors just decide if they are guilty beyond a reasonable doubt or not.
Wow, what do you expect from people are too stupid to get out of Jury Duty :v:

Why would you avoid jury duty? (admittedly I'm from a nation that doesn't have it, since public juries are often seen as synonymous with dictatorial regimes from a couple of decades behind so yeah well..)

Many people don't enjoy sitting around on a day they could potentially use for other shit.
I'd love to get on Jury duty, but I feel like I'd get put on a really shitty case and be bored the whole time.

People that don't want to do it just have to say something like, "I think I might know this person" so they're taken off the jury.
I've never been called, but it sounds interesting. I think trying to sneak out of it's kind of petty.

You have school(academic delays are allowed, but must be notified as soon as possible), being called in and be denied as a juror by one of the parties, or a couple other reasons.
I was summoned for jury duty but the days I would have to go were finals, I notified them and was delayed by 90 days and was told I wasn't needed for duty during that period when it came.

When you get summond to jury duty not all companies will compensate for your time being there, so when I make a decent amount of money but I haven't worked long enough to get full benefits I'll be loosing a lot of money if I go.
