Just bought a car, need recommendations on a dash cam.

As the title says I recently bought my first car (woo!) and I was looking to get a dash cam. Only issue being that I have no idea what I'm looking if I'm being honest. Just going off what I've seen listed on Amazon and various other sites. So I'm asking if there is anyone who has one and/or knows about them that could recommend me one between £20-£60. It doesn't need to have fancy features (they'd just be a bonus), but really just looking for good video quality, enough to read someone's plate if I ever get into a some kind of hit and run accident (worse case I suppose).
Thanks in advanced for your recommendations.
I will eventually get one myself so definitely watching this thread
I use a G1W but the newer GW1H is a fair bit better as far as value for dollar and quality goes. I'll look to upgrade to this one or its next version sometime in the future just because mine isn't nearly as good at night as this one is.
There's a couple guys in Auto addicts that might have an opinion on the subject.
I'd recommend the G1W. Quality is pretty good for a $50 cam. I'd watch out for fakes on Amazon though. I already got burned once by a counterfeit so I had to ask for a refund (I got to keep it though so sucks for them).
Here's some footage showing the quality of the counterfeit: [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPuDaB3zvO8

I have a mini 0801, it's a great camera (small, not obvious, full HD). Only major drawback is low light is pretty dark.
There's a newer model out also. 0803 from memory.
I think i'll get one aswell since someone touched my car's door with his and now I have to pay 180 euros because some dingus made a hit and run, literally, in my car while it was parked. So, yeah.
Btw, I can't remember, doesn't it record sound? Just asking. Because I'm more into the video quality aswell.
And can I get one from a regular store or I can only reach them online? I've never looked for one here.
I recommend the G1WH over the G1W.
The G1WH has an extra 20° of recording width, for a total of 140° of recording.
They all record sound, most have motion detection for when the vehicle is off.
I have had my G1WH for over a year now. Have had it work as low as 20F (inside car temperatures), as high as 100F+ (outside temperature, unsure how hot it was inside the car).
Here are a few samples from my YouTube. All are downsized to 720p;

My dad uses a gopro, they have great quality but I think he went a bit overkill for a dash cam but hey he always tries to buy the best he can.

I hope he doesn't leave it out on the dash when he's parked. That's one of the benefits of having a cheaper cam--just set it up and forget it.
Does a GoPro even support powering on via ignition... or loop recording?
It's also probably going to get his window broken :v:

A few benefits of a true dash cam over a GoPro;
Collision sensors
Can set clip lengths (3, 5, 10 minute, and continuous are popular)
Auto power on+record via ignition
The cost difference just isn't worth it.
I use a G1W as well, works well enough for me, even got a rearview mirror mount so it sits just below my mirror and is barely noticeable.
Turns out that my brother doesn't mind spending extra on higher quality camera. Though these recommendations so far are pretty good so far. Wouldn't mind some of the more expensive options if possible. That Mini series of camera look good though my main issue with it is the adhesive stick on method of keeping it on the windscreen. Main concern is that it would wear off eventually.
I don't have my own car, so I don't know how the supplying of power works, but I want a camera that can start up automatically and record to storage indefinitely. Are these cameras most likely fully compatible?

Depends on the car, since some only power the 12V outlet when the car is turned on or always on. But I imagine most dashcams can be configured to start recording once they receive power.
Every dashcam I've seen turns on and starts recording once the 12v outlet gets power.
