• Maximum Security Inmates Demand Jello, Better Variety of Chips and Sleep-ins
MASS killer Julian Knight is leading calls from prisoners at a maximum security jail for jelly, a wider variety of flavoured chips and better quality sunglasses. Port Phillip Prison inmates also want advance notice of "late let outs" caused by morning staff meetings at the jail so prisoners can plan ahead to enjoy sleep-ins on those days, the Herald Sun reported. Knight, who shot dead seven people and wounded 19 others in the Hoddle St massacre of 1987, is chairman of the Port Phillip prisoners' committee. Murderers and rapists are among unit representatives who act as "shop stewards" to air prisoners' grievances and negotiate with management. At its latest meeting, the committee called on the prison's management to provide more money for phone calls, photographs in the visitors' centre and the addition of 1.25-litre bottles of Coke to the canteen list, as well as jelly crystals and a better choice of chips. They have already negotiated a wider range of sweets at the canteen, including packets of Gummi Bears. But prisoners complained at the meeting that hair clippers were not being properly sanitised between haircuts. Members of the committee include Geelong bikie gunman Derek Bedson, murderer Neil Chalmers, serial rapist Muhammed Kerbatieh and La Trobe University killer Jonathon Brett Horrocks. A source said minutes from the last committee meeting showed Gummi Bears were not the only sweets sought. "Those with drug problems apparently want to be given lollies after they've had their methadone or 'bupe', to stop their mouths drying out and take away the bad taste in their mouths," the police source told the Herald Sun. Prisoner representatives were told the request would be considered, as would the possibility of an advance announcement on the PA system if prisoners were to be kept in their cells and could sleep in beyond the normal 8am "let-out time". Knight recorded minutes of the meeting, which reveal authorities at Port Phillip agreed to make more expensive sunglasses available after a request from prisoners. A specified model of Logan designer sunglasses has been added to the jail's "special buys" list. But the prisoners had failed to persuade management that expensive Asics running shoes should be added to the list.
Whatever your position on this, it says something that Australian mass murders and rapists get treated better than the poor (or even middle-class) in some countries. Now excuse me, I'm going to go rob a bank and petition that the government provide free university I'll post pictures of me in my Logan sunnies in a few months
Regardless of how they make it sound, prison sucks. There's no getting around it. And human rights do need to be respected regardless of what the person did. I'd want it done to me. Some of the things on the 'list' are ridiculous though, and need to be thrown out.
I'm in favor of this, one reason the U.S. prison spits out repeat offenders is because it treats the prisoners so badly.

I am slowly coming to the conclusion that before anyone, anywhere, is permitted to pass any law increasing the restrictions on inmates, that they need to spend 3 months in prison. The deprivation of your freedom at a fundamental level is already pretty fucking terrible.
how about they go fuck themselves and enjoy their free shelter & food despite the fact they're inside a maximum security prison for a reason?
how about they go fuck themselves and enjoy their free shelter & food despite the fact they're inside a maximum security prison for a reason?
Treat them humanely, like regular people, and respect their wants and desires (to an extent) and they won't shoot up a mall once they're spit back out from the hell they were sent to as punishment. Even the most vile of people once had innocence, and they deserve to be treated as human. No matter how heinous the crime. Even Saddam Hussein was given a trial.

A great example of prisoners being treated fairly, they even have a kitchen that looks like something in an average home. But, a transition from the US Prison system to something like that would take more than a lifetime.
I'm in favor of this, one reason the U.S. prison spits out repeat offenders is because it treats the prisoners so badly.
It should be mentioned that they do some work for money in prison which they can use to buy these things If they work hard they get about $150 a week which they can spend on cigarettes or sunglasses most don't really work that hard and spend all their money on smokes though
If you get treated like the scum of the earth in prison then you'll leave the place thinking that you're the scum of the earth and with that thought in your head you'll commit crimes more easily again.
I guess the jello and coke ones are a bit weird, but having prior knowledge of when you are going to be woken up and asking for the scissors to be properly sanitized between inmates is not too much to ask.
All of this at the law abiding, tax payer's expense
gotta have my jello
Oh shut up people who are all like "such a waste of money". I don't see you guys saying shit about the billion dollar bailouts, the trillion dollar war on "terror" and all the crap that goes on in DC. Don't complain about a hundred million dollars when our government spends hundreds of millions daily.

This is probably going to sound rather, well, bad, but I have always failed to see the point in sending someone to jail for life. What's the point in spending large amounts of money housing people deemed so dangerous that they will never be allowed back into society?

Because we as a society are civilized enough to provide these people a comfortable life until they die.

When I grow up I want to go to prison.
When I grow up I want to go to prison.
If you ever go to prison, I'm pretty sure that sarcastic shit-laden tone would be smacked out of you.
I'm in favor of this, one reason the U.S. prison spits out repeat offenders is because it treats the prisoners so badly.
Prison isn't a vacation...You're not supposed to have fun!

That is almost better than my college dorm, I think I would not mind that at all. Robbing banks erry day
When I grow up I want to go to prison.
Yeah, you would probably like it actually Everything is built around routines so it would be just like the world is run by your dream AI
Members of the committee include Geelong bikie gunman Derek Bedson, murderer Neil Chalmers, serial rapist Muhammed Kerbatieh and La Trobe University killer Jonathon Brett Horrocks.
I think that's funny.

When i visited a cousin at prison it was almost like this "slightly more strict though", he was sentenced to a year due to tax evasion but was released after a half.
umm those are pretty reasonable demands.

This is what prison should be like. We should focus on more things like this, where we make people become better, and more stable. The return rate to Scandinavian Prisons is very low.
