"The Call of Duty series has often prided itself on its realistic take on military warfare"
I've never heard that as a selling point for the series, personally.
I thought this was obvious but oh well
Well the WWII games were pretty realistic
We are trying to be a cinematic movie experience based on authentic equipment and authentic experience. A lot of the stuff that we show in the game has been done by someone, but it's not a representation of what they do or it's not an equivalent in any way of what they do. We're just trying to make a fun movie.
that describes it

My sarcasm detectors are broken, are you serious?
They stayed true to the setting by using scenery, weapons and uniforms from that time, but it was all run and gun. It wasn't that different than the newer CoD installements.
It wasn't just overthetop, well not to the extend of the modern games.
Are you telling me I cant get get a ham sauce in the real army?

Even since the first game, Call of Duty's been very movie-like in its approach. Hell, the first game even recreates or references a few major WWII movies with its scenes. Still even had the 'you're inexplicably the most likely to survive and handle all these objectives because you're the player character' factor. I'll give the first games credit, though; they weren't downright insane or ridiculous with main characters doing the crazy shit they do in the modern games. It was war heroics and action, not modern thriller over-the-top badassery.
Tbf I like Call of Duty for the story, it is like playing a hollywood action film.
You can't say you didn't enjoy Modern Warfare 1 and its pripyat level with explosive arm action.
I agree, the most ridiculous mission was the one where you drove behind enemy lines as a US soldier. Which was rather neat and not as ridiculous and over the top as the modern installements. It was still fairly normal compared to the newer stuff.

Right, but somehow people got the idea drilled into their head that this was exactly what military life was like.

Some people are stupid.

That's pretty much the best description of Call of Duty's singleplayer. The linearity and lack of interactivity make it a whole lot closer to a film than a game.

In the case of Modern Warfare 2, if you threw away the fact that it's a AAA budget game, it's a mildly enjoyable SP experience
I loved MW2
yeah no shit
Lots of dumbass teenagers seem to think otherwise.
I actually like that they went for the over the top action movie approach
I mean don't get me wrong I do really, really miss the somewhat desperate ww2 setting, but since ìt's not coming back anytime soon I'm glad they're keeping it interesting with the crazy plots and settings instead of trying for a half-assed realism

As long as you didn't think about timelines or logistics or why the hell the Russians' camouflage was red and they used primarily Belgian and Israeli weapons, sure.
You telling me snipers don't dive around with .50 cal sniper rifles and noscope people?
cod 2 was as close as realistic he series got.
Seems like a response to this.
