• Router incompatible with Steam

Alright, so I have a Dlink DI-614+, and according to www.PortForward.com, My router does not have enough ports for me to forward to run it. Strangeley, before the Steam Overhaul, I could run it with my router. Anyways, so I have come to two choices, Buy a new Router, or a switch. and if I bought a switch, would it work like this? Computer->switch-> Modem (With my Router also connected to the switch) Basically, having my PC not connected to my router, but have my router connected to a switch so it still makes it to my modem. So that way, I can skip all the port forwarding and get a direct connection to my router?
What do you mean not enough ports? Is the steam one already being used? I doubt your using all 65,000 ports
Yeah, but my router apparently does not support the forwarding of that many ports or something :P this: http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Dlink/DI-614+/Steam_Client.htm
You shouldn't need to port forward the steam client.
You don't need to port forward the steam client.
Fixed that for you. I've never had a single problem with Steam usage from not forwarding ports on my router. The only time you'll need to forward ports from the router is if you're running a listen/dedicated server from your computer. I find it hard to believe that portforward.com would tell you that; it's clearly incorrect. But then again, there it is. Just try using Steam and post results. EDIT: How was this dumb? It doesn't make sense that the router would block Steam from working at all; you only need to port-forward if your running servers. That's the only reason ports would need to be open.
okay, this is what happens. 1.Start up steam 2.Connecting account (long wait) 3.tells me to enter my pass 4.Could not connect to Steam Network. This could be a problem with your Internet Connection, or with the Steam Network. 5.Remove my Computer from the Router, and make a direct connection to my modem. 6. Works fine with direct connection to modem.
Use Modem>Computer>Switch>Other computers. (Of course you need 2 ethernet ports.)
Use Modem>Computer>Switch>Other computers. (Of course you need 2 ethernet ports.)
My computer only has one ethernet port, and I need to keep my router in the equation somehow, inorder to keep my house's wireless access up.
Can you post a screenshot of your routers port forwarding page? This can't be right.
My computer only has one ethernet port, and I need to keep my router in the equation somehow, inorder to keep my house's wireless access up.
Buy another ethernet port you can connect it in with the switch. (Or just buy another router?)
Now, I'm pretty sure its one of two pages here, help me if I did anything wrong, I'm not computer illiterate, but I'm no good with networking.. http://img59.imageshack.us/i/page1x.png/ http://img16.imageshack.us/i/page2vp.png/ (Yes I am running Steam, because I was running a direct connection to my modem, and switch back to my router, keeping steam running, I can chat, but can't play any games in this meathod) anyone know any good but relatively <$100 routers?
anyone know any good but relatively <$100 routers?
Anything except really high-end routers should be within your price range. Of course, you'd want to avoid D-Link after this.
Use DMZ?
Anything except really high-end routers should be within your price range. Of course, you'd want to avoid D-Link after this.
Sadly, D-Link is the cheapest I've come accross in Calgary.
Use DMZ?
are you stupid?
are you stupid?
No....?
What ISP do you have?
are you stupid?
Why is he stupid for suggesting this? DMZ might work if the router supports it.
My ISP? Shaw Cable Canada As For DMZ, yes, my Router supports it, its on right now as a matter of fact, but no dice to any effect.
This is an odd problem... You'll probably have to get a different router.
Know any good ones? I know that my router, despite saying it has open NAT, cant connect to quite a few games anyways. (This is Xbox related :P) So tell me forum, any good router models that are good for both console gaming, PC gaming, and a not terrible GUI like D-link's old models?
