A real bunch of lookers, eh? Anyway, Neutral Milk Hotel is an indie band, and is the brainchild of Jeff Mangum, the lyrical and musical influence behind the band, hereby referenced to as NMH, since I am a lazy fuck. They formed some time in the early 90's, and broke up in the late 90's, since Mangum, being the big panzy faggot that he is had a meltdown and couldn't deal with the stress. (For those of you who are slow, or are going to read this far and go "OMG U R LIEK SO OFENSUV U SHULD BE NICE LOL", this is sarcasm. Shut the fuck up.) In all honesty, the only album of theirs that I truly liked is In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. (Don't let my dumbass opinion hinder you, though, or undercut anything, their other albums may be terrific. I just personally, don't like them.) Let's be blunt. Anne Frank (pictured here) Is the subject of this album, and lyrically, the focus. Mangum became obbessed with Anne Frank in the early 90's, and literally fell in love with a girl who had died 60 years before. Apparently, this entire album was influenced by the dreams of Mangum, which he would later write down and create songs out of. Strangely, however, are the viewpoints Mangum takes to describe Anne Frank, and even stranger than that, he is mainly focused on her sexual life. Enough of me rambling, let's get some shwiggity shwiggity shwag media, shall we? Oh Comely (One of my personal favorite songs, EVER.) In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (A little more upbeat! I like it!) Two-Headed Boy (Sad, sad song.) I hope I've at least given this band a few new fans!
he is mainly focused on her sexual life.
Anne Frank had seck? when the fuck was this?

THIS IS A GAI TRHEAD! /greifing friend It's way better then the thread I made a long time ago.
I think it's funny that some 12 year old's rant about how "BAND LOGOS SUX" gets so many more views than an obscure indie band thread.
I don't think they're very obscure.
Two-Headed Boy Part 2 is good
Wow i just discovered these guys yesterday and this thread pops up.
My friend introduced me to these guys a few days ago. Two favourites are King of Carrot Flowers pt 1 and In the Aeroplane over the Sea
In The Aeroplane Over The Sea is an amazing album. And it's not only about Anne Frank. King Of Carrot Flowers Pt 1, and both parts of Two Headed Boy allude to another story, which is more fleshed out in the song "Little Birds".
Has anyone else heard this song? It's the only post-In The Aeroplane NMH song that Jeff has ever performed, and as far as I know he's only performed it once. I had no idea there was a recording of it but I was just sent an MP3, and it was the exact performance I had heard described. It's not up here I don't think. I'll post the link if anyone is interested. Incredible incredible song.

Yeah, it really adds depth to ITAOTS to me. Especially with the story of the brother dying. It makes me add things to ITAOTS that may not really be there. One time I was in Hawaii and there was a street musician playing Little Birds. I gave her money because she earned it.
I just discovered this rare gem on another forum (where those quotes are from). Supposedly it was only performed once, in a set available here: http://www.mediafire.com/?gwyjlj2mj5z And it seems that the 6th track in the set (Oh Comely) is broken, but the other 5 songs can be extracted from the .rar just fine. Also, that recording of Holland, 1945 is amazing. The whole crowd sings along at the end.. And Neutral Milk Hotel has expressed that they're fine with people sharing their live recordings.
Did you know the burning hell it took your baby brother? Did you see how far he fell and how he made us suffer? Another boy in town at night he took him for his lover And deep in sin they held each other So I took a hammer and nearly beat his little brains in Knowing God in heaven could have, never could forgive him So I took a hammer and I nearly beat his brains in
Oh, and I found it on Youtube (just the audio):
I'll never forget the first time I listened to In the Aeroplane. Such a deep experience for a 40 minute album. I remember my brother put the record on and told me I needed to listen to it a couple years ago. Maybe in '05. I probably sat there on his bed for a half hour after it was over just listening to the needle rubbing against the sticker in the middle of the record.
Best band ever.
I. Love. This. Band. So many songs I love, Ghost, King of Carrot Flowers, both Two-Headed Boys, are all just incredible. On Avery Island wasn't as good IMO but still great. My favorite, however is definitely Oh Comely. What. A. Song. I sing along to the band all the time, it can't get old.
Maybe I'm missing something or I'm just a music snob but this just seems like boring hipster trash. I listened to In The Aeroplane Over The Sea in it's entirety and I was cringing by the end. Not much cup of tea I guess.
One of the first bands I listened to and definitely one of my favorites. The King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1 is my favorite song of theirs

Nothin' to be ashamed of, there will always be performers that will touch some people so deep they don't shit right for the rest of their lives, and will not even pat others.
Oh man, you can't call these guys obscure. Everyone who refers to indie as a genre knows about them. I really really love the record, heard it for the first time some years ago and I still love every song. I'm a bit saddened I could never see these guys live, well, really almost no-one got to see these guys live. Also, that is the worst picture of Anne Frank, she's all green like.
Yeah NMH are far from obscure.
