Violence has broken out in India's technology hub Bangalore in Karnataka state over a long-running dispute about water. Protesters are angry at a Supreme Court ruling ordering Karnataka to share water from the Cauvery river with neighbouring Tamil Nadu. TS Sudhir reports on the latest crisis.
On Monday afternoon, a school bus was stopped in Banashankari area in southern Bangalore.
Three drunk men got into the bus and asked aloud, "Which child belongs to Karnataka and and which child belongs to Tamil Nadu?''
The 15-odd students, aged between 10 and 14, were stunned. Their school had asked them to leave early because the situation was tense, with violence and arson breaking out in many parts of the city.
"Luckily the driver handled it tactfully. He told the intruders that everyone was a native of Bangalore and that their families supported Karnataka on [water sharing with] Cauvery,'' said a parent, not wanting to be identified.
Battle for access
By dusk, dark smoke had filled the Bangalore skies. Some 35 buses had been set on fire by protesters, just because the buses belonged to an travel agency whose owner is Tamil.
Earlier this month India's Supreme Court ruled that Karnataka must release 12,000 cubic feet of water per second to Tamil Nadu from the Cauvery river until 20 September. Both states say they urgently need the water for irrigation and a battle about access to it has raged for decades.
Don't really know much about the situation over there but, seriously, going after children? I honestly wonder what kind of mentality runs through the heads of some of these idiots.
I can confirm that shit's getting really serious out there, 15,000 and more riot police have already been deployed and a state of emergency was declared in Bangalore, forbidding public gatherings. In my home state of Tamil Nadu as well nutjobs are attacking fellows from Karnataka, and people are manning road blocks in the border between the states, stopping them and asking them if they really are from Karnataka, and testing them "Do you know to speak and read Kannada? say something to us in Kannada and read the headline of this newspaper to prove it."
It's fucking insane and bodes very, very ill if this situation isn't brought under control soon.
Violent protesters really do tend to be the lowest, fucking ape-like members of our species. Like shit; Want to know a thing that will definitely NOT resolve the dilemma?
Burning busses.
Fuck Oil wars. Water wars are where it's at.
Like, there have always been problems when it comes to water release between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka over the years, but beyond grandstanding and being used as political capital by state-level political outfits, it's never really gone beyond that. But what's going on at present is unprecedentedly far more serious, and if shit gets any worse they might have to call in the Army to put a stop to this.
Shit like this around the world reminds me that I should be thankful for my average, bland, but safe life in the US.

war is not where it's at
India is a shithole, decidly.
Not surprising when you got 1 billion citizen.
I feel bad for them, too much i take thing for granted.
So that's what it was about. Much of the operations department based in Bangalore tech park couldn't get to work today. How nice of the protesters to start riots.
That was pretty smooth of the bus driver.

oh please, until humans become immortal its going to be the goto.

Just an fyi: A war between limited mortals is going to look like child's play if fought among limitless immortals, and it's always easier to destroy than create
The fact they feel they need to fight over water is horrible, but boarding a fucking school bus and then demanding to know if there are children on that bus from the wrong fucking region is despicable and entirely unsympathetic.

These people don't give a damn, they're willing to go to any lengths for their cause - their viewpoint is basically finding somebody to blame for their problems and then attacking that group.
it's insane how often shit like this happens in this country, and for the stupidest reasons sometimes.
