So, I've always had trouble maintaining a healthy weight, even with intense daily sports, this may have been because of my diet. Due to family issues I have been out of any intensive activity in the past year and a half, and my shape has deteriorated and I'm 10-15 pounds overweight. I now have plenty of time to work on myself, and I was wondering if it is possible to gain muscle and lose weight at the same time - ? Everyone I ask tells me "if you work out your body will burn the fat via metabolism", google also has very mixed opinions on this.
Bottom line is, I want more muscle and less fat, do I have to work on each separately (Month of cardio, - rest weight training) or can I do both at the same time, and how?
Thanks in advance
As far as I know, ( now i'm no expert ), weight training does indeed burn fat as well as building muscle.
Do you still do your "intense daily sports"? Might as well start weight training if you want muscle/less fat either way.

That's how it actually works!
Ignorance, is the only possible thing, that can get in your way of success, as in anything.
And that is abundant in here, There is people in here, that are frightened by the thought of doing Cardio, claiming that it will stop their gains. And limit it to 40 minutes, 2 times a week. What a retarded advice. Gaining lean muscle, takes time. It's not like they will ever notice. It's not about getting big, (water and fat make you big) it is about, improving your life style. "mens sana in corpore sano"
So hear me, lift hard, AND do cardio, as much as you can. I do 3 hours of intense cardio -everyday-, I care about LEAN muscle gain, vascular health, and eating healthy.
Your diet is important. Avoid fats, and WATCH your carb intake. I limit myself to oats for breakfast, and spaguetti for lunch. If I eat any more carbs than that, I will gain weight. (Even by doing 3 hours cardio) eat Chicken breasts, and Tuna for a living. Avoid beef, until you have control over your weight.
Protein shakes, are a must. If you're going to eat eggs, only eat the egg whites, Avoid Sodium in your eggs, and oil. I cook my egg whites, without oil. And they taste DAMN good.
There are alternatives for every food, Tortillas? Eat Nopal tortillas, they have 19 calories each.
None of my six meals a day, exceed 200 calories, and they leave me pretty much full, because of all the alternatives I use.
The number of meals a day doesn't matter, it's up to your personal experience. Breakfast should always start with a lot of protein.
And remember, everything takes time. PM if you want lifting advice and routines.
Don't do 3 hours of cardio... unless you really have no job or school. An hour and a half or 2 should be plenty, at max. Protein shakes aren't a must they're just convenient. Definitely watch your carb intake, avoid bad fats. Healthy fats like nuts are ok but don't go ape shit on the stuff obviously, also look at what a serving size really is you'll be surprised. You don't have to avoid beef as long as it's lean ground beef and good steaks. You should however avoid grains, they don't really do anything for you that you can't get from something better. But as stated before, lift consistently and eat well. blah blah google it or read through the other threads. It is correct though that the muscle can be gained while losing weight, however if there is no actual change in weight there will be a transfer between your fat to muscle ratio (in other words, your fat percent will go down but weight may stay the same for some period of time so don't be alarmed if it happens).
Also, sodium is not bad. It's what helps your body retain water which you obviously need. Moderation is key though.

No fats, avoid all oil? No proper nutrition? "Protein shakes are a must" with that diet? You eat <1200 cals a day and do 3 hours of intense cardio, weightlifting (even the cardio alone is enough to use the 1200 cals) and you gain muscle at the same time? And eating a little more carbs will make you gain weight?

I hope that I just don't understand your humor.

Where in the hell can you even buy Nopal Tortillas?
Also, 1200 calories a day? You'd die. Seriously. That is not an efficient amount of calories. I eat 6000 calories a day and only weigh 150 pounds. 3 hours of solid cardio would burn more than 1200 calories, so that's impossible.

Way to go, taking out of context what I said. If you're not doing any activity, that should be an ideal diet. Common sense, if you're engaging in physical activities, I would up that, to 3000 calories.
How about, you just fucking learn to read other people opinions, learned something from them good? Think they are wrong? disregard my opinion then.

I don't know how much you weigh but let's say the average guy weighs 150 lbs, 1200 calories isn't even enough for your BMR. I think it's like 1500-1600.

This.
I'm the kind of freak that somehow manages to lose weight on 2500 cals...
