I've been doing a little bit of research and lurking on the forums (look at my post count) to see which is the best AM3 motherboard. Also a beginner to PC building.
My budget is exactly $1000 (Yes I plan to build a PC in the upcoming month) but if it needs to stretch then so be it.
My current choice is an MSI 890FXA-GD70: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130274
The Plan:

The current total comes to $1056 AFTER shipping.
I'm open to suggestions to changing certain parts but right now I'm concerned about the motherboard.
I live in the Midwest.
Note: I do have a power supply, it's included with the case because of a combo. It is a 650W (plenty of power...Right?!)

I'd say look at an upgraded graphics card but I understand it's part of that package deal.

Good catch shadow. Make sure you get 64-bit otherwise your 4 GB of memory will be pointless.
Ok great thanks, will update.
HD5870 is just fine as well. There's only 2 graphics cards that perform better than it.
As for the best MOBO, I believe there's an ECS 790GX for $75. 8x/8x crossfire for $75 is an amazing deal, let me find it.

Thanks shadow, really nice mobo.
Joe it's a combo deal and it runs out in a few days so I don't think I'm gonna make it
On the OS or the HD5870? The card is just fine, trust me. As for the OS, you NEED 64-bit. Windows will only recognize 2.5Gb of your 4GB if you don't.
Well the best am3 board is that crosshair iv formula but idk if you can fit it in your budget. IMO.
Look for sata iii and USB 3.0 support
I came across that. it definitely won't fit in my budget
The OP picture is updated
The gfx card, case, and psu = combo deal
5870 = $400, Antec 900 = $70, PSU = $75. You're getting a good deal on that combo.
The only problem is the combo deal ends July 7, and I know I won't make it. >.< I have separate parts lined up when it ends but I'm afraid that'll make it way over budget... Unless I can find a combo deal similar to it.
No 32bit recognises 3.25, i had 32bit before but i got 64bit now.

1GB of vRAM.
That beats my line-up I had. although I don't really like the case which is where my problem is. I mean that case fits the budget but I really like the Antec 900: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129021&cm_re=antec_900-_-11-129-021-_-Product
I suppose I can stretch the budget about $100 max, but only if need be.
Then just switch the case. It only adds $20.
might want a slightly larger psu for upgrades in the future like crossfire, extra hard drives etc.
True. You won't be able to CF another HD5870 with the Corsair 550. You could with a Corsair 700Watt.
That's what my first build had when I first started planning. But anyways I'll try to find a good corsair 700w and add the case, and gfx that Shadow posted
Also: how do you know what kind of psu to get that will power all components?
Corsair power supplies are among the highest quality. The two components that consume the most power is the CPU, and the graphics card. The HD5870 will use around 150Watts at load, but when overclocked, can use around 350Watts. The phenom will use around 100, but overclocked will use around 250. These two components run on the 12-volt rail.

As you can see, this PSU can supply 500Watts of pure wattage on the 12-volt rail, which is more than enough.

Never ever fucking buy a case with a PSU. Unless it is a separate PSU, not like the one you listed.
That's just a combo. Antec makes quality PSUs. It's not a shitty no-name.

Don't know what crack your smokin' but it's mighty powerful.

OP get this; the motherboard has the new 8xx series chipset w/ 8x/8x crossfire + usb 3.0 + sata 6.0; Don't know if you need a dvd drive and all the other stuff either, but it has a 5850 instead to fit everything else. The rosewill case is awesome too, built a friend's pc around it and it's good; for the price it's just crazy.

Tell me again what hardware was in that system :).
i5 is better man
At stock settings, they both perform about the same.
I would only go with an i5 if you plan on overclocking since if you compare a 955 and an i5 750 at the same clock, the i5 performs better.

8 cores vs 4 though.
What in the who?
I don't think the i5 has eight cores, nor does the 955.
Core i5 and Core i7 (including the 980x) have a thing called "hyperthreading". It allows for each core to have an additional logical core. Each i5 and i7 is a 4physical 4logical core setup, for 8 cores. The i7-980x is 6physical and 6logical cores, making for 12 cores. Disabling HT can lead to better overclocking and less power consumption, and much less heat produced.

Where's my informatives.

The core i5 750 DOES NOT have hyper-threading. It is 4 logical cores, that's it. Look it up yourself. Other i5's like the 655k (recently read up on it) is a dual-core with hyper-threading.

k part means it has an unlocked multiplier.

No and no. Right off the bat, a 955's TDP rating is 125w, it won't take up anymore unless you overclock it. Even then, the raise in power consumption isn't that substantial, certainly not two-fold.
For the 5870 part:

Even if you were talking about the combined system load, your statements sill a bit off...
