• Mountain Dew and other sodas put out fires; also cause memory loss, skin lesions, and nerve disorde

[release]Brominated vegetable oil is patented as a flame retardant and it's banned in food all over Europe and Japan, but it's on the ingredient list of about 10 percent of sodas in the U.S. It's not in Coca-Cola, but is in Mountain Dew, Fanta Orange, and in some flavors of Powerade and Gatorade. What brominated vegetable oil (BVO) does to soda is, Coca-Cola explains, "prevent the citrus flavoring oils from floating to the surface in beverages." The fruit flavors that are mixed into a drink would otherwise settle out. What BVO does when it's acting as a flame retardant is not much different: It slows down the chemical reactions that cause a fire. Safe For Consumption? The FDA established safety limits for the substance in the 1970s, but Environmental Health News reports about growing concerns that the limit was informed by reports put out by an industry group containing outdated and, as industry-generated information tends to be, less-than-comprehensive data. EHN has the details:
After a few extreme soda binges — not too far from what many gamers regularly consume – a few patients have needed medical attention for skin lesions, memory loss and nerve disorders, all symptoms of overexposure to bromine. Other studies suggest that BVO could be building up in human tissues, just like other brominated compounds such as flame retardants. In mouse studies, big doses caused reproductive and behavioral problems.
EHN explains that BVO was pulled from the Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) list for flavor additives in 1970, "bounced back after studies from an industry group from 1971 to 1974 demonstrated a level of safety," at which point the Flavor Extract Manufacturers’ Association (which actually exists—not to be confused with the government agency FEMA) "petitioned the FDA to get BVO back in fruit-flavored beverages, this time as a stabilizer, which is its role today." Interim Approval -- For More Than 30 Years Today, more than 30 years (and much animal testing, including on pigs and beagles) later, the approval status for BVO is still listed as interim. EHN reports that changing that status would be expensive and quotes FDA spokesman Douglas Karas saying it "is not a public health priority for the agency at this time." With BVO banned in so many countries, there are feasible alternatives. And that brings us to the unsurprising but disturbing note on which the EHN story ends:
Wim Thielemans, a chemical engineer at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom, said since the alternatives are already used in Europe "their performance must be acceptable, if not comparable, to the U.S.-used brominated systems." That means "the main driver for not replacing them may be cost," he said."It is a North American problem," Vetter added. "In the E.U., BVO will never be permitted."
[/release] Source Article's original source Maybe I won't do the dew anymore.
I drink plenty of Mountain Dew and my memory is fine.
Welp, guess I'm not drinking that stuff anymore.
I drink plenty of Mountain Dew and my memory is fine.
Or do you?
I drink plenty of Mountain Dew and my memory is fine.
How can you be so sure if you don't remember it?
I drink plenty of Mountain Dew and my memory is fine.
That isn't the point...if anything it demonstrates what's wrong with our food/drinks and chemicals
So wait, my terrible memory is all due to Mountain Dew? Well, off to sue their asses!
To me Mtn Dew sucks. Never liked it. I'm good with root beer, Sierra Mist, and Seltzer.
No wonder my fucking bottom eyelids twitch so much. Same with my legs sometimes, just a random twitch.
This is like one of those things they'd mention on QI in the year 2070. "In the early 21st century our current fire brigade's flame retardent was drunken as a soda"
Good thing I stopped drinking soda years ago. My friend wanted me to try that MW3 tropical Mountain Dew and I nearly spit it back out. Tasted like artificial shit and looked like drain cleaner when I dumped it down the sink.
I would drink some Mountain Dew, but I forgot where I put it.
From the studies I've been able to find, it only looks like you're in trouble if you drink about 2 to 4 L daily, or 8 L daily. So if you only have one or two once in a while, you shouldn't have to worry about random skin lesions.
I'm glad the only soda I drink is regular old Pepsi and Coke. Wait, this stuff isn't in Pepsi right?
Seems to have something to do with fruit flavoring, so probably not. Unfortunately orange soda is one of my favorite sodas so I might want to lay off that. I don't drink soda that often or that much though so I might be okay :tinfoil:
EU master race
All I care about is, does Dr. Pepper have that in it?
Fuck yes, it's not in Dr Pepper. (Or, at least, it's not on the list) [editline]FUCK YES[/editline] Did some quick research, it's safe to say that Dr Pepper does not have BVO.
Agree, I only drink the Dr. so it looks like I'm fine. Girlfriend loves Fanta though, may want to warn her.
Good thing i don't really drink soda anymore. Except for the occasional coke, and often some sprite. Never really liked moutain dew as much as most others, people always freaked out about. While i agree it's good, never really though it was THAT good.

The only thing I really liked was the gamer fuel stuff they had years ago. Other than that, nothing.
The amount of BVO soda needed to cause any bromine related diseases is already unhealthy in the first place.

I don't understand how people can stand to drink soda at all. I haven't had any in like, 5 years. It just tastes like liquid sugar to me.
I looked up skin lesion on google and found this handsome picture. I honestly don't know what it is. NSFW http://www.ann-clinmicrob.com/content/8/1/17/figure/F2 And for those who did click on that link, here's some eye bleach. http://eyebleach.com/

Thank God my Dr. Pepper isn't tainted by this.

"Mountain Dew is one of many citrus-flavored sodas that contain brominated vegetable oil, used as an emulsifier. Video game enthusiasts drink large amounts of them."
