(CNN)President-elect Donald Trump has chosen retired Marine Gen. James Mattis as his secretary of defense, a source with knowledge of the transition says.
Mattis, 66, joins a Trump national security team that already includes retired Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn as national security adviser and Rep. Mike Pompeo as CIA director.
The official announcement is expected early next week.
The retired four-star general, known as "Mad Dog," was lauded for his leadership of Marines in the 2004 Battle of Falluja in Iraq -- one of the bloodiest of the war.
But he attracted controversy in 2005 when he said "it's fun to shoot some people" while addressing service members in San Diego.
Mattis' selection could put him in position to temper both Flynn and Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and an appointee of President Barack Obama -- whose generals Trump has said he distrusts.
Mattis has already proven to have the President-elect's ear. After meeting at Trump's New Jersey golf club last month, Trump said Mattis gave him a new perspective on waterboarding, a torture tool he has pledged to reinstate.
"General Mattis is a strong, highly dignified man. I met with him at length and I asked him that question. I said, 'What do you think of waterboarding?'" Trump told The New York Times. "He said -- I was surprised -- he said, 'I've never found it to be useful.' He said,
'I've always found, give me a pack of cigarettes and a couple of beers and I do better with that than I do with torture.'"
Patron Saint of Chaos, blessed be the Mad Dog!
well, not his worst pick for cabinet
Pretty fantastic pick, IMO.
"Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet."
Holy shit this is the best day so far this week.
good pick/10
He actually really does seem like a good guy, and appears to basically be a legend amongst the military, so pretty nice pick.

Good. Torture has never been reliable, people will say anything they think the administerer wants to hear in order to get it to stop rather than actually divulge anything useful.
Probably going to be his best cabinet position choice, which isn't that hard considering the picks for other cabinet positions are awful. Mattis may not like trump that much but he has a strong sense of duty to his country.

I'd rather have a loyalist to the nation (Mattis) than a loyalist to a president as SecDef
Well at least we have one diamond gleaming from the shitpile that we call Trump's cabinet.
Praise Allah!
chaos, this is godfather actual over

His quotes are legendary too

Hell of a good pick for SecDef! So many leadership traits that lots of people can look up to.

"What is the kill/casualty radius of your knife-hand"
I wonder how times he's been asked that.

Can someone explain why this guy is a good choice in a way that doesn't involve some obnoxious quote

One of the greatest generals of the modern era. Knows how to properly deal with the enemy in a cordial yet forceful way. Has maintained morale as a figurehead character in the military for years. Overall cool dude who actually understands the nature of warfare and how to keep an army fed and supplied while still fighting.
From the sounds it he's also a meme, which will probably work to trump's advantage.

He has enormous amounts of actual military experience (far more than any defense secretary in recent memory), is very popular within military circles (which is good for morale), and is regarded as an expert in counter-insurgency warfare (which is what our military deals with these days)

/pol/ was trying to use meme magic to get mattis as vp, but this is just as good.

He's practically the living embodiment of the perfect Marine from what I'm reading. He's not really a meme
This is perfect. I'm so glad to know that between all the vastly different political opinions on this site, we can all mostly agree when it comes to the military.
The Marine love this guy so much they would literally obey him if he decided to plan a coup against the US.

He can be both.
Is this guy basically the modern George S. Patton?
Good choice, hopefully he can drain his own swamp of fools and reprobates and fill it with sane competent people like Mattis.
In light of Mattis' credentials on top of his credentials, I think this is by far Trump's wisest decision yet.
If only he had the same mindset when picking the rest of his cabinet, then the next four years would look pretty reasonable.
