Every game has a soul. Every game has a spirit. When you played Rage, you got the spirit.
Not really. RAGE was great on a technical level, but otherwise it was really bland and design by committee.
Not really. RAGE was great on a technical level, but otherwise it was really bland and design by committee.
And if those same people are saying Doom 4 wasn't good enough, I think you can probably take their word for it.
Given how what makes a shooter that will appeal to the masses changes like every hour nowadays, its kind of understandable. There are people who'd love for it to be Doom/II with better graphics and maybe some new guns and monsters, but that wouldn't appeal to everyone. Another Doom Life(I say this because Doom 3 felt like a forced merge between Doom and Half Life) probably wouldn't go over so well. Given ID has a bit of integrity, I doubt they'd take the COD route. As long as it doesn't end up a reskin of the original The Sims, only with demons.
I don't think Doom 4 will be good at all, and it will probably be more like Doom 3 than Doom 1 and 2. Or it will be like Duke Nukem, stuck in the past. 80's inspired 90's things usually have bad 00's and 10's sequels. And ID is one of those companies where despite John Carmack being god, they got so out of the loop and are now lost in time, trying desperately to make modern games with modern trends but never getting it right.
Think about this for a minute. TIM FUCKING WILLITS didn't like it. That had to be one horrible game.

Game play suffered a bit and also took a big hit on level design. Modding was also reduced, but still in. Rage : A lot of new technologies introduced, many of which were not quite ready and resulted in a bland experience. Level design kind of went all over the place and couldn't decide between large open areas or cramped airplane corridor shooter. Modding went ??? So if this trend is to continue, Doom 4 won't only have an identity crisis, it won't even know what the hell it's supposed to represent in the first place. Either we get deserts of nothing with some wooden shacks full of action, or we get another duke nukem. It's not looking too bright. And I don't think modding will have much thought for it too :(

please just make a good new twitch fps
Just hire some people from Interceptor entertainment (ROTT 2013) and let them do the job.
They should take Romero back. He was the heart of Doom while Carmack was the Brain.
please just make a good new twitch fps
I don't think they will because consoles controllers aren't good as twitch fps
Sounds like Thi4f syndrome, but with more pressure on the team since their attempt at original IP - Rage - flopped. The guy did say they want to change something big about Doom (heart, soul, spirit, whatever), but last time the team tried something with "original" ideas it backfired hard. But you can't exactly give something character by pandering to fans or the mass market's status quo, so playing it safe is also difficult. I can see why sequels like Duke Nukem/Thief/Doom can cause management panic very easily. Quite frankly with this in mind I'm amazed we got the DXHR that we did.
Just hire some people from Interceptor entertainment (ROTT 2013) and let them do the job.
I wouldn't want the new Doom to be full of hitscan-weapon wielding enemies that blend in perfectly with the games backgrounds.
