• Riot changes Season 4 LCS contract, players can now stream whatever game they want
Hey everyone, There’s been a ton of discussion around our LCS team contracts, which stipulated active LCS players couldn’t stream a variety of other games. First, background on why we did this: there’ve been instances of other game studios trying to buy access to League fans by using (or trying to use) LCS teams/players to promote their competing games on stream. The way we chose to deal with this was clearly an overreach. It hit our goal of preventing companies from advertising through LCS players, but it also encroached on pros’ ability to have fun and entertain viewers during long Challenger queues – and we realize that’s not cool. After reading all of your comments and having a LOT of internal debate over the last 24 hours, we’re going to be changing the LCS team requirement to something that more closely matches our intent. While under contract to the LCS, teams and players can’t accept sponsorship from other game companies to promote other titles. Besides that, they are free to stream any games they want. Well that's good. The whole thing felt way more controlling and intrusive.
What the hell did they think was gonna happen?

They really seem hell bent in limiting teams who participate in LCS.

This is most definitely a business, and the players are getting paid pretty handsomely iirc. They don't want their teams promoting something that hurts their business. Think of it this way, you wouldn't have an NFL team playing for another league while at the same time playing for yours.

Their minimum is 12,500, or something along those lines. Most of the revenue comes from sponsors and stream revenue from what I understand of it. This is by no means a big sports league with multi million dollar salaries, and it's somewhat questionable if that will happen anytime soon.

Riot has always been this way, people are only just now seeing it because of their LCS shit.
They really want to monopolize the whole esport business.
didn't counter strike used to be the number one esport? Do counter strike tourneys still happen?

More like an above average job salary just for playing video games, but it's not like you are a millionaire.
didn't counter strike used to be the number one esport? Do counter strike tourneys still happen?
Not really, though it varied by region. Yes. Would you explain why this is relevant?
They really want to monopolize the whole esport business.
technically not esport since they're really trying to push for the whole "league of legends is a sport" idea and they're trying to mimic how sport leagues operate with contracts and "professionalism", albeit not very well.

It's obvious the contract is targeted at the teams in the LCS and not the whole organisation they represent.
