It's insane, but at this point I don't know what to expect when it's introduced to a republican supermajority.
What would this cause, if it happened? anyways? Obviously bad, but how fucked would everyone be?
I think it would cost a lot to move and relocate the entire U.N. building to another country.
It would be ridiculous to give up our seat at the table, especially considering our powers on the Security Council. Also, it's worth noting that similar bills have been sponsored by Ron Paul. Not much support for it in Congress, though.
Hope it doesn't passes. Else, my population will be in heavy shit.
To think that US would voluntarily give up a pillar of international leadership role it's been building for decades. China would be ecstatic to take up the mantle, I believe. Just think for a second - UN headquarters would be hosted in a place with no free expression, independent judicial system or much in the way of human rights. That would be a heavy blow for western values.
Getting a little ahead of ourselves aren't we, Republicans? You forgot to precede with a massive anti-UN propaganda campaign first.
Which Republicans / how many Republicans have been vocal against removing the US from the UN?

Why does the US want to sabotage its own influence? Or well, parts of congress at least.

And America wouldn't be able to push around the UN Security Council for trying to do anything at all involving Israel or Palestine. So... America can only lose control of things Americans supposedly care about? Including that most volatile of third rails, Israel? Ok go ahead with that, America, but I don't want to hear bitching when the UNSC tries to sanction Israel and tell it what to do with Gaza. Oh fuck this is an attempt to recreate Brexit in the US, isn't it? If I hear Unexit becoming a serious thing, fuck me with a bandsaw
Good, Fuck the UN
I'm speechless. These politicians have their heads so far up their own asses that they're now trying to topple an extremely strong pillar of American leadership in the world. Newsflash, we can't maintain our standing with our military alone. The major reason we got here is economics, and the major reason we stayed is diplomacy. If we leave the UN, we forfeit all benefits to it, we forfeit our voice in major world matters, and we forfeit our permanent position in the Security Council, something we'll never get back even if we rejoin. To leave the UN would be a massive hit to our own power on the world stage, and likely the path to losing superpower status.
"We are considered the leaders and have power over the UN and NATO, able to influence most nations around the world" "We should leave them and lose it all" literally retarded
Jesus Republicans what type of country are you trying to turn us into?
Jesus Republicans what type of country are you trying to turn us into?
A country where you can't even afford fresh air apparently.
A country where you can't even afford fresh air apparently.
Oh god. They are trying to make the Lorax movie a reality.
Oh god. They are trying to make the Lorax movie a reality.
It would be easier to do that on mars like total recall.
Good, Fuck the UN
Thank heavens for the UN.
The world's nations would be far better economically off if it weren't for the likes of the UN, the IMF, the World Bank, the Bank of International Settlements in Basel, Switzerland and the Vatican Bank. The only reason they are trying to bring people together is to consolidate everyone under their rules. They're not very effective at it today, but sooner or later there will be a UN Parlimentary Assembly and oops! Now they're very powerful.
The US is acting like a singer from a hugely popular band who suddenly quits in a drunken, cathartic fit because "I am the band, you freeloaders are nothing without me!" ...And then he's dumbfounded when the band doesn't actually need him. His own solo career is nothing compared to the group's success, but now he has no control over them and no influence on the direction they want to go in. They get a whole new sound and they don't even want him back. That's what the US leaving the UN would do to us. So many Americans have this backwards notion that the UN is holding us back, and that we'd be some sort of thunderbolt-slinging vengeful god without them, whipping the world back into shape the way we think it ought to be. Or that it's costing us loads of money and giving "nothing in return." No, the UN was a massive leap forward for American influence. After WWII, the US and other victories allies had the enormous privilege of being able to define when and where war is justified. We had massive diplomatic influence over the creation of new laws that literally run the everyday business of our world, and yet, staggeringly, we often decide not to ratify the laws we help write, like the Law of the Sea. Few countries in the history of the world can claim that they were able to write the rules and then decide that they weren't obligated to follow them. But now we want to turn around and say, "that's it, we're tired of getting shafted!" and the whole world is looking at us like we're insane. If we go storming out now, it's not like the UN will collapse. Instead, it'll send the signal that the "post-WWII" regime is basically over and that it's time for a new regime to begin. They'll look to Russia and China for influence and the US will either be increasingly defiant and isolated, or we'll eventually come back with our tail between our legs with a fraction of the prestige we had before.
There are very few countries whose leadership structures clearly want to rule the world. Two of them appear to be based in the Middle East and they appear to manipulate other countries either financially or via propaganda and pressure groups to achieve their goals. It appears, from the available evidence, combined with common sense that United States set up the UN in order to retain control over the direction of the development of the world's developing nations via their share of the vote, so that those nations may be brought into the sphere of US influence as they develop.
People are really bitchy about anything that requires commitment and cooperation it seems.
Good, Fuck the UN
Can you explain why?
-snip dumb thats his name not party-
Good, Fuck the UN
Obviously the solution to fearing that the big stinky scary NWO world gubmint is going to come to pass is to give up all our power within the UN and allow the likes of China and Russia to make all the decisions unmolested. You sure showed them, grats.
I think anyone that wants to leave the UN is ignorant of all the good the UN does outside the security council and other things that make the news.
I'd be open to restricting the budget for parts of the UN that aren't really worth while or cost effective, but leaving as a whole is completely retarded, the U.N. holds no real power over the U.S. and doesn't threaten our sovereignty, we've chosen to support it to the extent we have because of the leverage it gives us over international politics. We gain nothing and destroy the balance of international politics, fuck I hate both parties so much.
God bless America. And nobody else.
i thought they were going to try to be subtle about it at first but i guess they'll just go ahead and plunge america straight into complete irrelevancy
