The Path to the Metaverse
I'm tremendously excited to join Oculus, and when I think back, it's astonishing how unlikely the path to this moment is. I've told most of the parts of this story before, but never all together, and the narrative, now spanning twenty years, just keeps getting more remarkable. [..]
Who would've known back then that both those dudes end up working for the guy on the left.
You could do better then abrash.
Holy shit, this is such exciting news. Oculus is now the VR Dream Team.

Like who?
RIP Oculus right guys
do you even know who Michael Abrash is
its a sarcastic jab at the recent overreaction with the facebook acquisition over the past few days
something really good happens "yeah but oculus is fucked haha am i right"
Like who?
For instance an expert in the academic field like from the VR lab at Stanford.
Abrash is a guy that likes to be near the center of attention and in his blogs he dosen't credit people by name of what advancements were made or found. If so then the footnote is small enough where i missed it.
In fact his statements about what conditions for vr are not solid and should be contested or verified under stricter scientific experiments. Might not get a theory down yet, but it needs to be peer reviewed.
What it boils down is they hired him to win back the fans, because when you heard about valve and vr abrash's name was behind it. Some who know more also know about who else oculus hired from valve vr, but the majority of people don't know that.
But winning the fans over this way isn't the solution.
RIP Oculus right guys
No, because Abrash is a great engineer.
Now we just need Microsoft to buy Facebook and rename the Oculus Rift the XBox Kinoculars.

You really hate Abrash. Stop being so brash.

Actually, this is why he joined Oulus.
That's why I've written before that VR wouldn't become truly great until some company stepped up and invested the considerable capital to build the right hardware – and that it wouldn't be clear that it made sense to spend that capital until VR was truly great. I was afraid that that Catch-22 would cause VR to fail to achieve liftoff.
That worry is now gone. Facebook's acquisition of Oculus means that VR is going to happen in all its glory. The resources and long-term commitment that Facebook brings gives Oculus the runway it needs to solve the hard problems of VR – and some of them are hard indeed. I now fully expect to spend the rest of my career pushing VR as far ahead as I can.
Or he could actually know what he's doing and potentially be a valuable mind to help push the product further.
Abrash spun his words from focusing on a company to pick it up to avoid catch 22 from it's just not ready two years from now.

The people who know what they were doing to get things to work were people not in the limelight also working at valve.
Lets see who else from valve moves over to the oculus Washington office, all abrash did was "i want goid vr", the other people went "we have to do this first".

I don't know why I laughed so hard at that :v:
The dream team of Carmack and Abrash is back. This is the single coolest thing I'll read for a while.

I'm sorry, but what I'm getting from your posts is you claiming that he is a narcissist that only wants to work on the Rift because it'll keep him in the spotlight, as opposed to him actually having a legitimate interest in it. And that he was only taken in at Oculus in order to win their audience back because people know his name, as opposed to actually having the required skills and experience for the job.
I'm sure I misinterpreted you because surely you can see how ridiculous it is to make those kinds of assumptions about someone you don't even know. I'm also fairly certain that Palmer and Carmack are smart enough to not bring in someone based on name alone.

I'm getting a very strong vibe that he's either an idiot, or horribly deluded...

If you're going to jump in the thread and shit nonsense everywhere, you shouldn't leave your sources out like THAT's the part of the conversation that's "off topic".

For the record I never received any PMs.

Now that's a little harsh, sure he's making a few minor baseless assumptions, but he's not like that guy who kept spewing all that "Big Brother" nonsense in the thread about Facebook acquiring Oculus VR.

He was the project leader for the VR project at Valve(which ended), and he worked for ID Software in the past.
Even if nobody knew who he was he would be a pretty much perfect fit for the job.
I am not sure why you think that the fact that he is a public personality, it immediately makes him unsuitable for the job and incompetent in what he does.

John Carmack gets to do this because he's John Fucking Carmack. He doesn't have to give a shit what anybody thinks. He's transcended all that.

they all look like nerd man children and i wouldn't have it any other way
I have to say this
If I hadn't come across Ready Player One at the right time. Heck, if I hadn't come across Snow Crash all those years ago, or the Doom alpha, or known John from the M&T bulletin board, or if I hadn't known Gabe Newell and Mike Harrington from my days at Microsoft, in which case I would have had no reason to help them license the Quake source code...
sure does make him sound more than a bit self absorbed.
