Yeah I'm not surprised it killed him, the rotor on that thing can probably easily crack a skull
RC helis are (or atleast are close) to the difficulty of flying real helicopters, so It's easy to imagine that some idiot just buys one, takes 1 quick lesson and fuck shit up with catastrophic results.

I once got a small flying lesson in one of those things and even without controll of the tail rotor it already is a giant pain in the ass to fly.

People fly them like this.
It was only a matter of time before they turned lethal.
Just imagine how fast the tips of those rotors are going and how thin they are, one clean cut to the jugular and you're outta here. See you in the next life.
I used to go to this club where they had quality model airplanes and helicopters.
Like, home-made ones.
About a month after I started going, they banned the helicopters.
We asked why, and apparently someone had decapitated them self.
I've got a small RC heli on my monitor right now. It's a tiny little indoor coaxial with 'unbreakable' rotor blades just 7" in diameter. Should the rotors hit something they'll just bounce out of the way, they're mounted on hinges. Even that tiny little thing can draw blood if it gets you just so, and it weighs less than 60 grams all up.
RC aircraft of all types are dangerous machines and should be treated with respect. Even my tiny, quote-unquote 'safe' heli can cause injury. The bigger ones are most definitely lethal, as this story shows. Now, we don't know if this Swiss gentleman was being a dumbass at the controls or just got hit by an unlucky wind gust, but it does prove how dangerous some things are. Here's hoping it doesn't lead to any bans on model helicopters.

I've always wondered what the appeal of flying them in that manner is. It doesn't look fun to me, either from a pilot's or spectator's perspective.
I have a Cyclic/Coaxial Pitch Mixing helicopter which is much smaller than the ones that would have killed the guy, and I can confirm that these are very very very dangerous if they can get out of hand. Also the rotors blades are hard as fuck and will fuck your shit up.

Instead of banning them, that club should have charged people extra to come watch on helicopter day.
I have a Blade CX2 with some aftermarket parts and it's cut me to the bone before after a loss of control
a few months ago someone crashed a RC plane into a light fixture on a heavily traveled path on campus. He posted the video from a camera on the plane and it came within feet of hitting someone on its way down. :v:

What'd you expect from something called a Blade.
I nominate this for the Most Unexpectedly Lethal Hobby of the month.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm, internal combustion. Such a shame he's just spazzing out on the sticks...

This could quite realistically be weaponized.
So they fly them like a ufo? So entertaining.
This could quite realistically be weaponized.
It already has, they're called drones and they've been around for years. We use the planes in Afghanistan and we use the helicopters for domestic use (police).

Pretty sure he means the helicopter itself, with just the blades (such as what happened in the OP but on purpose)

Then it might as well already be weaponized :v:

I'll just leave this here.
I like to think that I have slightly above average knowledge on physics and flight, but how the fuck does he stand still upside down and pointing upwards is beyond me.
inverting the pitch of the rotor blades

Ever tried flying one of those? Calling that "spazzing out on the sticks" points towards the fact that you haven't flown anything other than a paper plane.
I've heard this about flying those helis:
Its like balancing a bowling ball on top of another bowling ball with one finger while trying to avoid hitting yourself with said balls (heh)

That's pretty much a remote controlled chainsaw. Also, it reminds me of a Half-Life 2 model with spazzed out physics.
It might just be me, but the way that thing is moving really reminds me of CGI footage. I really do not think this is real.
Whether or not this is real (it probably is though), all of that is completely possible.
Murder decoy. Very clever. B|
Man, these things have way overpowered engines for their size. I mean these are the kind of maneuvers you'd expect only tiny insects would be able to pull off, not a 100× larger and way more dangerous model helicopter.

I'll just leave this here then.
Imagine.
