Prime Minister Enrico Letta made the announcement during a visit to the island with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso. Mr Barroso pledged 30m euros ($40m) of EU funds to help refugees in Italy. At least 274 people, mostly from Eritrea and Somalia, died in the capsize. Divers are recovering bodies.
I don't want to even think about the sort of awful person who'd be against this.
Jesus that's a lot of people. Good on Italy to give them a proper service.
I don't want to even think about the sort of awful person who'd be against this.
I'll tell you what's going on in Italy. The dead immigrants have got Italian citizenship as a form of respect for their death. However, what about the live ones? As cold as it may sound, the dead don't really need the citizenship as do the live ones. Italy is one of the worst places for immigrants because some "politicians" in the government passed laws against them. There's a specific law in Italy (Bossi-Fini law) that doesn't make them Italian citizens, ergo they can not rent an apartment, find a job, or pretty much do anything other than being left on their own in the tents where they live. And nobody is doing anything for them. You'd think that after traveling through the Mediterranean, facing death, hunger, thirst and illnesses, they'd finally have a better life, otherwise they wouldn't have left their homes. But no, some people in our government prefer sending them back to where they came. Also all the media are focusing on is Berlusconi's decay, so they don't make it look a big of a problem, but it is.
