Vegetarians are less healthy and have a lower quality of life than meat-eaters, scientists say
Vegetarians are less healthy than meat-eaters, a controversial study has concluded, despite drinking less, smoking less and being more physically active than their carnivorous counterparts.
A study conducted by the Medical University of Graz in Austria found that the vegetarian diet, as characterized by intake of fruits, vegetables and whole-grain products, appeared to carry elevated risks of cancer, allergies and mental health problems such as depression and anxiety.
The study used data from the Austrian Health Interview Survey to examine the dietary habits and lifestyle differences between meat-eaters and vegetarians.
The 1320 subjects were matched according to their age, sex, and socioeconomic status and included 330 vegetarians, 330 that ate meat but still a lot of fruits and vegetables, 300 normal eaters but that ate less meat, and 330 on a more meat-heavy diet.
It found that vegetarians consumed less alcohol and had lower body mass indexes, but were still in a poorer state of physical and mental health overall.
Participants who ate less meat also showed a tendency to avoid attending doctors appointment for preventative measures such as vaccines, the authors found. It concluded: "Our study has shown that Austrian adults who consume a vegetarian diet are less healthy (in terms of cancer, allergies, and mental health disorders), have a lower quality of life, and also require more medical treatment."
The study's authors have already defended the research against claims that their work is simply an advertisement for the meat industry.
Study coordinator and epidemiologist Nathalie Burkert told The Austrian Times: "We have already distanced ourselves from this claim as it is an incorrect interpretation of our data.
We did find that vegetarians suffer more from certain conditions like asthma, cancer and mental illnesses than people that eat meat as well, but we cannot say what is the cause and what is the effect.
"There needs to be further study done before this question can be answered."
Trying to skirt a balanced diet leads less physical health? Who knew!
[sp]I don't actually believe this, mostly due to the sample size and geographic location.[/sp]
Joke aside, it'd be nice to actually read the results and not the news report. The comments on the source are also gold. :v:
Now I can finally prove my girlfriend just how wrong she was with all the "you can live just as normally without meat"
Doesnt surprise me considering the fact that humans are omnivores. Not fucking herbivores.
Well no shit ?
what a bullshit generalisation.
I was a vegetarian for the first 18 years of my life and I can confirm this. It has been nothing but awesome ever since I stopped.
-it's not as awkward socially anymore when you order food. People always would ask why I ordered a vegetarian item
-the quality of energy that I have now is way superior, and I'm not as lethargic as before
-convenience because not every place is going to have vegetarian options
basically when I stopped caring, the world felt so much less strict. I could comfortably sit in any restaurant without the worry of wondering what I was going to eat.
Well no shit ?
Yes shit
While the article checks out, and correlates with fairly well understood principles (that we're omnivores etc), i wouldn't describe this as a self-evident truth
To be fair, at my college the vegetarian options are often so shitty that I have to kinda feel sorry for my roommate who has to usually survive on junk food and cereal.
Rofl, 3 times as many women as men in their sample group.
You people can eat your vegetables.
Me? I'm gonna go make some bacon.

Bacon wrapped steak is even better.
In a first step, subjects consuming a vegetarian diet were
identified (N = 343). All vegetarians were categorized according to
their sex, age (in age-groups spanning 5 years, e.g. 20- to 24-yearolds),
and socioeconomic status (SES). Each such vegetarian was
then matched with one subject consuming a carnivorous diet rich
in fruits and vegetables, one individual eating a carnivorous diet
less rich in meat, and one subject consuming a carnivorous diet
rich in meat. Only 96.2% of the vegetarians were included in the
analyses, since not all of them corresponded to a subject of the
same sex, age, and SES from a different dietary habit group.
You've got to be shitting me.

Being a vegetarian means you are going to deprive yourself of a big portion of stuff you need to live. If you don't take supplements to deal with the fact you're gonna lack an entire portion of your diet on a day-to-day basis, you will have issues very fast.
the respondents were
given a list of six different dietary habits and asked which one
describes their eating behavior best (1= vegan, 2= vegetarian
eating milk/eggs, 3 = vegetarian eating fish and/or milk/eggs,
4 =carnivorous diet rich in fruits and vegetables, 5 = carnivorous
diet less rich in meat, 6= carnivorous diet rich in meat).
Apparently vegetarians only included around 2.2% of the total survey sample @ 330, so, yeah.
“We admit that the large number of participants made it necessary to keep the questions simple, in order to cover the large sample” concludes researchers. “Overall, we feel that our results are of specific interest and contribute to extant scientific knowledge, notwithstanding some limitations regarding causes and effects.”

Yeah why didn't they sit everyone down in a room and tie them to chairs and force feed them specific diets while keeping them under constant camera surveillance.

I'm currently one and have been so for the past 17 and a half years of my life and I can relate to all this :v:

Protein can be gained in the form of eggs and nuts - infact, most, if not all, of the required nutrients from meat are found in eggs as well. That's why including vegans in this test created an awry result.

Aren´t those kind of studies everywhere tho?
Apparently vegetarians only included around 2.2% of the total survey sample @ 330, so, yeah.
Their "matching" process is what boggles my mind.
It totally ignores the correlation between their parameters.
Lets put it like that.
You want to compare apples gowing on different trees for their worms. You want them to be exactly the same in every other parameter, weight, colour and so on so you can make sure the worm content is only influenced by the tree they are growing on.
Now what you forget here is that the tree it grows on might not only influence the tree-worm relation but also the interaction between weight and worms, colour and worms and so on. Maybe heavy apples have more worms on one tree and less worms on the other.
By matching them by these parameters you are actively influencing theparameter you want to measure.
It's p. ridiculous.

Yes but not with a fucking preconditioned sample goup.

It's like statistics 101
Why do people have to make a big deal out of something other people eat?

That's not the point. It's know that people tend to lie to themselves by answering the "better" option in these kind of studies.
